Excel shifting rows to the right of Column A (or C) downward

Excel is shifting all rows to the right of Column A downward by one. That is, I have spreadsheets with all info for category/name A in one .xls initially entered in the same category/name row (only 706 rows & 11 columns). In another .xls (4389 rows & 12 columns) the same thing happens after column C [data sorting is turned on in this .xls, though not used). When I return to the spreadsheets, all the info past a certain point has been shifted down one row. This is quite annoying !!!!

Does anybody have a fix? Sometimes I can figure out where the data has been shifted, but I am losing some data....
This has been going on for a year or three, & I am getting aggravated.
