Slow access to shares

Hi All

We still have a running vm of 2012 server running, fully up to date.

There server has multiple shares still with lots of resources available

When Windows 10 & 11 users initially click on a windows 2012 server share, there is a 10-15 second delay before it connects. Once connected opening that share up again or it's sub folders is instant. We thought originally it was just office when you did a save as but also seems to be windows explorer as well.

Any idea, thanks

    Hi,

Thank you for posting the question to the Q&A forum.

From the provided information it looks like more Network or Disk issues. First, maybe it has some latency inside your network and if it's not that, I would suggest you Run, Resource Monitor to see if the disks I/O are working ok.

I hope the above information can help you.

    Thanks

I have checked the network which is all running well and we have also replaced all switches on site with new ubiquiti managed devices. We did originally think this would resolve the issue as network access has been way faster since.

The disk i/o only happens from time to time when watching the monitor.

My question here would be why is it only on the initial access to a shared folder and then perfectly finer after that. If it was network or i/o it should be doing for anytime this springs up.

    Thanks

    Glenn

    Hi,

If you are experiencing slow access to a network share on a Windows client device, you can try disabling the SMB metadata caching on the client side or in the shared folder settings.

You can disable SMB caching in the shared folder settings. Open the properties of the shared folder, and go to the Sharing tab -> Advanced Sharing -> Caching. Select the second option “No files or programs from the shared folder are available offline”.

Thanks LimitlessTechnology-2700 but have done that to every shared folder and still does it.

I can't seem to replicate it between servers but then I not doing it all day. It's just a little odd
