Questions regarding the services:

  • Are they the same service? or the Compliance Manager is a sub-functionality of Microsoft Purview? or they are not related?
  • If they are the same service, then, do I have to create a Microsoft Purview account first in Azure portal before using the Compliance Manager?
  • From what I gathered, you only need E5 license to access the compliance manager and you don't need a Microsoft Purview account because Microsoft Purview in Azure is for data governance. Is this correct?
  • Is the Microsoft Purview Compliance Manager cover all the subscriptions on a tenant? Or can you apply it on a specific subscription?
Microsoft Purview
Microsoft Purview
A Microsoft data governance service that helps manage and govern on-premises, multicloud, and software-as-a-service data. Previously known as Azure Purview.

    Hi ihaveeyes,
As you know, Purview is all about data protection. Compliance Manager is one of those functions for data protection.
Compliance Manager will generate a data map of all of your data and let you set policies to ensure your data is being used they way it should.
Yes you can think of it as a sub-functionality, as what you want to do with your data from a security perspective can take many roles.
Compliance Manager will normally be tenant focused (from my experience), but you can have it focus per subscription (see link below).
