Hi,

We are trying to migrate databases using Azure Data Studio Migration Extension. We have an Azure SQL VM with one Default SQL Instance (running on port 1433) and 4 SQL Named Instances (running on dynamic ports). But, ADS Migration Extension doesn't detect any of the Named Instances on the "Azure SQL Target" screen. It eventually restores in the Default SQL Instance on the target Azure SQL VM even if we type in the named instance name manually under "SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines". Is it a limitation of the Migration extension?

Hi, @Sandeep Sobti Thanks for the question and using MS Q&A platform
If I understand correctly you are migrating databases using Azure Data Studio Migration Extension and ADS Migration Extension doesn't detect any of the Named Instances on the "Azure SQL Target" screen and wants to know if this is a limitation.
Unfortunately, this is a current limitation for DMS v2. our product team is working on options to support this one.
It's transparent to ADS, whatever instance SQL IaaS extension is recognized on your target VM, ADS will make it as your target. You have to enlighten the full mode to light up the migration capability. The full mode only works on the Default instance or the Named instance, if you have both then the extension will fall with the Default instance. You can drop/rehost the default instance to another machine if you would like to keep migrating to the named instance. There is a limitation of SQL IaaS extension to support multi instance.

Please let us know if any further queries
