Powerpoint Data Loss

I have recently encountered issues with PowerPoint crashing every time my computer goes to sleep. As I started working on a presentation and accidentally closed my laptop, all the work I had been doing on that document was gone. I have tried locating my file in the auto-recovery folder and recycling bin but it was nowhere to be found as I had not saved it yet. How may I recover the file and what measures can I take in place to ensure PowerPoint does not crash this frequently in the future?
