DPM 2019 installation issue connecting to SQL 2019

Hello,

I am attempting to install DPM 2019 on a new virtual machine with Server 2019. I have installed SQL 2019 locally. I have created a domain account, "sa_sql_dpm". I am running the DPM 2019 setup as Administrator, but I get an error:

33666-screenshot-2020-10-20-143201.png

So let's walk through these:

  1. I'm RDP'd into the computer, so yes.
  2. I followed the steps as listed to create a firewall rule, but for now, I've disabled the firewall.
  3. I've tried with both my AD administrator account and the sa_sql_dpm account. I have added sa_sql_dpm to the local Administrators group on the server, as well as assigning it the "public" and "sysadmin" Server Roles in SQL Server Management Studio. It also has User Mapping to "master" and "msdb". The domain admins group also has these settings.
  4. This service is running, set to automatic, logging in as Local System.
  5. SQL Server Configuration Manager -> SQL Server Network Configuration -> Protocols for MSSQLSERVER -> TCP/IP = Enabled.

I'm no DPM or SQL expert, but I think I've checked everything and I'm still dead in the water. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Zachary Hamilton

P.S. Is there no tag for System Center or Data Protection Manager? Geez.

    Hi @Zachary Hamilton ,

DPM is currently not supported in the Q&A forums, the supported products are listed over here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/products (more to be added later on).

You can ask the experts in the dedicated DPM forum over here:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-us/home?category=dpm

I don't know anything about DPM, but I know SQL Server. Exactly what did you specify for the instance when you attempted to install DPM? The error message makes me think that DPM Setup does not find the SQL Server instance, so it is immaterial which permissions you ave set.

I get the feeling that you specified an instance name of MSSQLSERVER when you should have specified a default instance.

As I said, I don't know DPM, but if you can add a screen shot where you configure the instance, that could be helpful.
