Dear All,

We are using AD DS in Window server 2012R2. Can i install new secondary domain controller running in Window Server 2019? is there any issue for co-exciting between primary and secondary from difference version?

Thanks!

Do i need to migrate SYSVOL replication?

Yes, its a requirement Server 2019 cannot use older FRS technology.

You can confirm by looking here, if you find 48 then using DFSR, if null or 0, 16, 32 then FRS or some state of migration from FRS

If you find it is already DFSR then you can move on to standing up the new 2019 domain controller.

I'd use dcdiag / repadmin tools to verify health correcting all errors found before starting any operations. Then stand up the new 2019, patch it fully, license it, join existing domain, add active directory domain services, promote it also making it a GC (recommended), transfer FSMO roles over (optional), transfer pdc emulator role (optional), use dcdiag / repadmin tools to again verify health, when all is good you can decommission / demote old one.

Yes, you can as long as prerequisites are met.

The two prerequisites to introducing the first 2019 domain controller are that domain functional level needs to be 2008 or higher and older sysvol FRS replication needs to have been migrated to DFSR

    Hi,

Before the first 2019 domain controller is added to the domain , the DFSR should be used for the sysvol replicaiton.

The following command can be used to confirm that:
    dfsrmig.exe /getglobalstate
If the Result: 3 (ELIMINATED) the DFSR is used for the replication.

If the FRS is used , then check the Domain/Forest function level , and upgrade to 2008 or higher.
Then make sure everything working well with command :

    Dcdiag /v >c:\dcdiag1.log
    Repadmin /showrepl >C:\repl.txt
    Repadmin /showreps *

    Migrate the FRS to DFSR.
if you still have any questions about this, feel free to let us know.
    Best Regards,

Does domain running on server 2012r still replication using DFSR?

The replication technology used (FRS / DFSR) is per domain. Yes 2008 and newer domain controllers can all use DFSR. 2012 R2 and 2019 domain controllers can coexist without issues.
