Windows 10 Home to Pro Update became Enterprise and won't activate

My Windows 10 Pro update purchased from Microsoft store failed to install and left me with Enterprise edition that I can't activate.

History:

  • Purchased laptop that came with Windows 10 Home.
  • After signing into my Microsoft account, I purchased a Windows 10 Pro update.
  • I then followed the link to install the update.
  • Note: my installation only has one user account with Administrator privileges.
  • The update started, but after a small while, it reported Error Code: 0x080070005 (which Google tells me is 'access denied')
  • At this point, the update window would not close, so I had to right click it via the task bar and select the 'Close Window' option.
  • After this, I attempted to re-do the update, but Windows presented no option to retry the update and seemed to consider the update as complete .
  • It is at this stage that I noticed that Windows had reported itself as Windows 10 Enterprise and not Windows 10 Pro.
  • PC reboot didn't change anything.
  • Also, if I attempt to activate it, the activation fails.

So... how should I resolve this issue?

    Many thanks.

Changing the product key by specifying a Generic Windows Pro key (and thus downgrading from Enterprise to Pro) did the trick.

My installation is now activated and reports itself to be Windows Pro.

    Cheers
