I am new to Azure. Currently in the process of getting ready for the AZ-900 certification. I was trying to stand up a Windows 10 but came across the same message ("an eligible Windows 10 licence with multi-tenant hosting rights"). I only have the $200 credit and don't have licenses for Win 10.

Is there a license trial available? It does not matter if it expires x amount of days after the creation of the box? Thanks for your help.

    Hi @Anonymous ,

do you really need the Windows 10 multi-session version?
If "yes" you need one of these licenses (at least this is my understanding, but I am not a licensing professional):

    • Microsoft 365 E3/E5
    • Microsoft 365 A3/A5/Student Use Benefits
    • Microsoft 365 F3
    • Microsoft 365 Business Premium**
    • Windows 10 Enterprise E3/E5
    • Windows 10 Education A3/A5
    • Windows 10 VDA per user

If you need just a "normal" Windows 10 license you should pick the a "normal" Windows 10 image for the V;M. This way the Windows 10 license is included in the price of the Azure VM.

Welcome to Azure! Licensing is a more advanced topic that you can likely skip for now until you are more familiar with setting up VMs. While a Windows 10 VM does require a license (such as a Visual Studio subscription), you do not need a license for a Windows Server VM as it is included in the cost of the VM.

When you are setting up your VM, leave the "Would you like to use an existing Windows Server license?" box unchecked (this would be used if you had a qualifying Azure Hybrid license which is outside of the scope of an Azure 900 course). There is a step by step walkthrough of a basic VM setup in our VM quickstart (pay special attention to step 8):

Also note that 750 hours of Azure B1S General Purpose Virtual Machines for Microsoft Windows Server is included in the 12 month free Azure account:
