For a client i have to move a domain from one to another.
Both are not hosted by Microsoft. But the email is running through exchange server.
In order to keep al the clients emails safe, what are the steps i have to take?
Do I have to create a backup from all the exchange email?

I'll try the explain some more.
for example.
My domain exampledomain.com is hosten at hosting service Strato.
i added a TXT-record there, so that i could add my domain-name to the exchange service of my account.
so all my mail from example@exampledomain.com is saved in microsoft exchange.
Next i gonna move the hosting of the domain-name to another hosting service, Antagonist for example.
I have to add there the new TXT-record.
my question is, what happens with the mailboxes in exchange if they loose connection to the domain for a short while.
Will they be safe because they are linked to example@test .onmicrosoft.com ?

The microsoft subscription itself will not be changed or stopped.
The hosting of exampledomain.com changes.
The TXT-record will be unavailable for some time
All the mailboxes should be safe.

Great thanks for the clarification, that really helps.
The conclusion is that you don't have to worry about e-mail lost since these are stored in the Database. When you are changing the domain, you may suffer a mailbox disconnecting issue, but that is expected.
I'm considering if you change the domain name from domaina.com to domainb.com and Exchange keeps as it is, you may have to rebuild the hybrid with another certificate. And also there are a lot settings need to be changed from the AD/DC.
If you mean the domain name is not being changed, then that's simple, just do what you gonna do.
Kindly suggest that consider backup the mailboxes first: Mailbox imports and exports in Exchange Server

Sorry but I gonna say I'm not pretty sure what are you going to do and what does "Both are not hosted by Microsoft" mean......
If you mean you want to move from the AD domain that's in using to domain B, you may install a fresh Exchange on domain B and coexist with the legacy Exchange, then migrate all mailboxes to the new one.
Or if the two domains are not in one forest or even two not-trusted forests, you may export the mailboxes to .pst files and import them to the new domain, witch also requires an Exchange server and new mailboxes.
In both situations, you could backup the mailboxes with .pst files.
Please let me know if I did anything wrong, well you could share more about this issue to make me understand your requirements better:)
