Connect External Image Library to Microsoft Office

I would like to use images from our external image library directly withing Microsoft Word without having to leave Word. I have seen this kind of integration for other image libraries so I think there must be some kind of API I have to implement. Is there any documentation for this kind of integration?

    Based on my research, there are some 3rd-party add-ins to let Office apps connect to external "image library", but it involvs program development.

    To better help you, I would modify the tag, as tag "office-word-itpro" just focus on general questions of Word clients. Thanks for your understanding.
