Which type of groups considering its membership allowed group-licensing in Azure active directory

Type of groups:

  • Security Group
  • Microsoft 365 Groups

Membership types:

  • Assigned
  • Dynamic User
  • Dynamic Device

In which of the following scenarios is possible to assigned group-based licensing and how I should I know in which case it would be better to assigned license directly?

  1. Security group with membership Assigned
  2. Security group with membership Dynamic user
  3. Security group with membership Dynamic device
  4. Microsoft 365 group with membership Assigned
  5. Microsoft 365 group with membership Dynamic user

Thanks!

@Julio César González Montaño Thanks for reaching out.

AAD group based licensing only supports security groups (on cloud, or synced from on-prem), and Microsoft 365 groups that have securityEnabled=TRUE.
It has to be assigned or dynamic USER security group.

So you can filter out non security and device group from your list.

Also here is a known limitation of AAD group based licensing : https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/enterprise-users/licensing-group-advanced#limitations-and-known-issues
