Windows 11 Customize WIM/ESD

Hi,

I am customizing the install WIM/ESD file to remove some of the Appx packages. However the new built-in Chat/Teams one is not shown using Get-ProvisionedAppxPackages. I need this gone since we use Office 365 which bundles in Teams. Now on Windows 11 I have 2 Teams apps which will be confusing for users and is a showstopper to our Windows 11 pilot deployment.

I remember in early builds of Windows 10 the OneDrive setup was kicked off on first boot after a clean install via the RunOnce registry key. Doesn't look like new built-in Teams is done this way.

Also since I am removing bundled Appx packages, the default Start layout now shows empty grey boxes since it can't find those apps! I've tried exporting the Start Layout to a json file and then putting this file in the suggested place in the WIM/ESD (Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Shell) but this doesn't work. How do I customize the default Start for all users to remove these pre-pinned app shortcuts for apps that are no longer present?

Thanks

    Hello @Lanky Doodle ,

if find an answer, please write it here. I've got the same problem, I cannot deploy a Windows 11 image with two different "Teams" apps where one is not working.

I found that the Teams Preview app is not included in the OS image, just the Chat button and some advertisement for it. You can verify this by installing Windows 11 without Internet access. However, if there is Internet connectivity available, the Teams preview app is automatically downloaded and installed in the background even if you disable the Chat button by group policy.

I also tried to find out to no avail how the background download is triggered.

One important thing I found out: in Windows 11 you must not remove Cortana (Microsoft.549981C3F5F10_2.2106.2807.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe) from the image as this will break several other apps like Store and Editor. Can't remember the details, but there was a similiar bug in an older Windows 10 release.

    Best regards,
    Fred
