Windows Server 2022 - Extend C:

Hi,

Ive just installed an new WS2022 server on our VMWare infrastructure, and realised i had to extend the C: even further.
But the recovery volume is placed behind the C: volume = i cant extend the partition.

This is not the normal behavior of Windows, so i installed an new VM next to this one.
Only to realize that WS2022 does this by default.

How are we supposed to extend the volumes, when Microsoft places the recovery partition behind the C: volume?163814-disk.png

    This is absolutely ludicrous... in today's virtual world, extending volumes is a daily practice, and the behavior of having the recovery partition created after the OS partition is new/unique to server 2022 -- it needs to go in front of the OS partition like all previous server versions! Microsoft needs to fix this asap... telling us to use 3rd party tools to fix something that Microsoft broke is not a good response.

    So when is MS going to correct this issue? I now have a 40G C drive on a 2022 server. When I do a search about the issue MS pages don't come up but a ton of different partition vultures wanting money do. I am now thinking MS is in bed with them. All they have to do is release a fix for this.

    Hi there,

    There are two types of recovery partition in Windows: one is Windows recovery partition, and the other is computer manufacturer recovery partition, also called OEM recovery partition. If you decide to delete the recovery partition, you’ll lose all data on it, which means you’re not allowed to use Windows RE and default data anymore.

    You can use some third-party tools to move the recovery partition to another location or extend the C drive.

    Here is a thread as well which discusses the same issue and you can try out some troubleshooting steps from this and see if that helps you to sort the Issue.

    I understand that it is wrong behavior to put the recovery partition after the system partition. Because it does not allow to expand the size of the C drive if necessary, having to change the way of preparing the virtual machines. In previous versions, since Windows Server 2008, the system drive is always the last drive, allowing that drive to grow if you need more space. That this problem will be corrected in the next system update.
