Hi everyone,

Hope you all are doing well! I would like to ask some questions about OS on domain controllers.

We would like to get a new hardware server running either 2019 0r 2022 and make it as our new domain controller running the FSMO role. Our existing 8 domain controllers are running Windows 2012 and one of them is running Windows 2012r2. Do you think if this be compatible and supported? Our Forest and Domain level is 2012.

Thank you for your help in advance.

    Not a problem.

The two prerequisites to introducing the first 2019 or 2022 domain controller are that domain functional level needs to be 2008 or higher and older sysvol FRS replication needs to have been migrated to DFSR

I'd use dcdiag / repadmin tools to verify health correcting all errors found before starting any operations. Then stand up the new 2019 or 2022, patch it fully, license it, join existing domain, add active directory domain services, promote it also making it a GC (recommended), transfer FSMO roles over (optional), transfer pdc emulator role (optional), use dcdiag / repadmin tools to again verify health, when all is good you can decommission / demote old one.

    Hi DSPatrick,

Good morning! Thank you very much for your response and info! You mentioned I need to "migrate" the sysvol to DFRS, which is "new" to me. I also read the link you provided and read about the DFRS. May I ask if that really need to perform?
