These release notes provide information about new features, security updates, and nonsecurity updates that are included in Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) updates to Office 365 ProPlus in 2017.

Note

The following also provides information about new features, security updates, and nonsecurity updates for Visio Pro for Office 365 and Project Online Desktop Client.
This information also applies to Office 365 Business, which is the version of Office that comes with some Office 365 plans, such as Business Premium.
Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) was named First Release for Deferred Channel prior to September 2017.

Fix an issue where, when saving a sync-backed file, Office fails to write to disk, but Office keeps uploading the file to OneDrive. With this fix, user will now see an error message and the upload won't proceed.
Fix an issue where editing and formatting text after an undo in a table causes PowerPoint to crash.
Fix an issue where references to Flash Player based YouTube embed codes result in a new window opening to play the video. Old embed codes are now upgraded to reference HTML5 based YouTube videos so that they correctly play in place.

Fix an issue where Word crashes when a user tries to do a Save As to an existing document on OneDrive for Business and then cancels the save or tries to merge existing changes.
Fix an issue where, when saving a sync-backed file, Office fails to write to disk, but Office keeps uploading the file to OneDrive. With this fix, user will now see an error message and the upload won't proceed.
Fix an issue where Word can hang if the user navigates to the Insert tab shortly after opening Word.
Fix an issue where, after clicking the margin, characters are displayed in the upper left of the screen when entering characters.

Fix an issue that causes .box file format changes, which impacts functionality of older versions of Office installed on the same computer, because .box files are shared across all versions of an Office app on the same computer.
Fix an issue where, under certain circumstances when using shared computer activation, an error message appears saying that the app has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly and asking if the user wants to run a repair.

Excel: Feature updates

“Add Column from Examples” enhancements: Supports more Date/Time, Math, and Index Column transformations.
Performance improvements: Excel opens complex workbooks with multiple sheets faster, so you can crunch formulas with large ranges, filter lots of rows, or copy and paste quicker.
Insert online pictures: New landing page for selecting images and attribution information is automatically inserted with the image.
Azure Data Lake Store connector: Users can now import data from Azure Data Lake Store.
"Add column from Examples" enhancements: Supports suggestions, more Date/Time operations, and other transformations.
Data tab: Ribbon buttons on the Data tab have been rearranged into two new groups: Get & Transform Data and Queries & Connections.
Share queries: Export any query definition into an Office Database Connection (ODC) file, and then share it across workbooks or with others.
Load data: Load data from a query directly into PivotTables or PivotCharts without having to save the data into the Data Model.
Shared file activity: Choose the Activity button in the upper right corner of the file to see when a file shared in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint was shared, edited, renamed, or restored.
Safe links: When a user clicks on a link, Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) inspects the link to see if it’s malicious. If the link is deemed malicious, the user is redirected to a warning page instead of the original target URL. More information
Enhanced data import functionality: Easily import and shape data from various sources. Manage workbook queries and connections with the Queries & Connection side pane, and share queries with others via ODC files. More information
Changes in shared files: View who has made changes in shared workbooks, and restore earlier versions. More information
Lasso Select with a pen button: Use supported digital pen buttons to Lasso Select ink without visiting the ribbon.

Fix an issue where Excel temporarily hangs when you expand or collapse a PivotTable and the PivotTable headers move off the screen.
Fix an issue where tabs are ignored when copying and pasting tab delimited text from Word, resulting in the text not being parsed into columns.
Fix an issue where Excel crashes when opening the Publish as Web Page dialog box.
Fix an issue where a data refresh doesn't succeed or Excel crashes when using data from a SQL Server Analysis Services server, and the locale of Excel and the locale of the SQL Server Analysis Services server differ.
Fix an issue where errors appear when trying to save changes to documents synchronized with the OneDrive client.
Fix an issue where changes can't be made anywhere in a worksheet when there is a PivotTable with fields in the Filter area, but no fields anywhere else.

Outlook: Feature updates

Accessibility improvements: We've made it easier to read and edit text, tables, lists, and images in email when you're using a screen reader.
New account configuration: Set up new accounts with a new wizard that requires fewer manual steps.
Attach dialog for links: When attaching a link using Attach File on the ribbon, you can select whether to add it as a link or as an attachment. If you don’t want to see this dialog each time, go to File > Options > General and specify how you want links to be attached under “Attachment options.”
Support for on-premises attachments: Files from on-premises SharePoint Server show up as recent files under Message > Attach File, on-premises OneDrive for Business and SharePoint team sites appear under Attach File > Browse Web Locations, and local files can be uploaded to on-premises OneDrive for Business sites.
Business classifications for groups: A business classification level defined by the tenant admin, such as Confidential, can be assigned when creating or editing a group, and that classification appears in the group header.
Guest access to Office 365 groups: Collaborate with people outside the organization by granting them access to group conversations, files, calendar invitations, and the group notebook. More information
Actionable messages: Developers can create messages to make it easy for users to take simple or quick actions right from Outlook without having to switch to an external web site or separate app. More information

Windows Information Protection (WIP) support: Excel is now an enlightened app, and can differentiate between corporate and personal data, correctly determining which to protect, based on configured policies. More information
Get & Transform improvement: In the Query Editor, create a new column by providing sample values. As you type, Excel detects the required transformations and shows a preview of the new column.
Insert recent links: Easily attach hyperlinks to recent cloud-based files or websites, and create meaningful display names for people using screen readers. More information
Personalize the default PivotTable layout: Set up a PivotTable the way you like, and start with that layout every time you create a new PivotTable. More information
Get & Transform improvements: Users can create new columns by example and split table columns into rows. Specifying parameters to SAP HANA and grouping data is now easier.
Centralized deployment of add-ins: Admins can deploy and update add-ins to users or groups from the Office 365 admin center. More information
Quick Access Toolbar customization: The Subscript and Superscript icons can be added to the Quick Access Toolbar.
Get & Transform improvements: Automatic detection of delimiter character when splitting columns using the Query Editor, choose which sample file to use with Combine Binaries, and specify the package collection to connect to when using the DB2 Connector.
Dubai font: Font family that supports both Western European languages andthe major languages that use the Arabic script. More information
Background removal: Remove a picture background with a free-form drawing tool.
Get & Transform improvements: Use “Select Related Tables” in the Navigator dialog with the ODCB and OLEDB connectors, combine multiple files directly from the folder Data Preview dialog, and use a new context menu option in the Query Editor window to insert new steps in existing queries.
Use a pen to select and change objects: Grab object handles with a digital pen to resize, rotate, move, and more.
Map Chart: Compare values and show categories across geographic regions. More information
SVG images: Insert and edit scalable vector graphics (SVG) in workbooks. More information
Insert icons: Use icons from a standard library of scalable vector graphics (SVG) files by going to Insert > Illustrations > Icons. More information
Save to Recent folders: Save a workbook to a recently used folder by using the Recent tab when you go to File > Save As.
