SharePoint Online Document Library - List view threshold

I'm currently migrating content into a SharePoint document library with minimal metadata. I have reached 4,500 files so far. Can I proceed with my migrations which will take me to approx. 25,000 files. What steps do I need to undertake to in the first instance to deal with the view threshold limit of 5,000? or can I proceed with the migrations?

What steps do I need to undertake the sort out the list view issue?. Any help and guidance will be greatly appreciated. Dal

I would do a search about this before accepting the advice of the Msft reps here who have to tow the Msft line, which isn't exactly truthful. As has been proven over and over, when you exceed 5k items, most operations requiring a query of all items will fail, regardless of what you do to mitigate that. The misnamed "list threshold" is not new as you suggest and is in reality a hard item limit that you exceed at your peril. Msft will not help you resolve the problems exceeding the limit will cause.

    Hi Dal,

Thanks for your updates. You are right. you can change the related setting after migrate the files. And if the document library uses Modern Experience, you may not have the threshold error.

    Hope these can help.

    Regards,

    Clark

    Thank you for the reply.

From the reply above, I take it's ok to proceed with the migrations and exceed the 5,000 files limit. Thereafter, create the index columns and modify the views accordingly? as per the link above (Manage large lists and libraries in SharePoint) sent by Clark?

    Kind Regards

    Dal

    Hi Dal,

I go through the post. as you can see the article:

SharePoint limits, you can have 30 million files and folders in a document library, you will meet the list view threshold error if you have more than 5000 items in a view. If you migrate 25,000 files into a library, you can store them in the library and do some changes in view settings to remove the threshold error. To manage large list and libraries and for more information, you may check the article: Manage large lists and libraries in SharePoint.

    Hope these can help.

    Regards,

    Clark
