    Hello Jamie Saunders,

I can see why this is confusing.

When you created your Microsoft account using your Gmail address, Microsoft automatically generated that outlook_[long string]@outlook.com address behind the scenes. It's not a real usable mailbox — it's more of a technical placeholder tied to your account. That's why you can't send or receive from it properly.

Microsoft covers this in this article: Outlook.com email account appears as outlook_[long series]@outlook.com

To get a working @outlook.com email, you can create a proper alias on your account:

    • Go to https://account.live.com/names/manage and sign in with your Gmail. From there, click Add email > choose a new, readable @outlook.com address (like ******@outlook.com). Once created, set it as your primary alias.

After that, you'll have a real Outlook email you can actually use to send and receive — and it'll still be under the same Microsoft account tied to your M365 Family subscription.

Let me know if you need any help.

The Microsoft 365 Family subscription and the email address used to sign in are separate from the email accounts used in Outlook. The subscription can be on a Microsoft account that uses a Gmail sign‑in identity, and Outlook can still send and receive mail from either Gmail or Outlook.com addresses once accounts are added correctly.

To use Outlook with the correct mailbox, configure the mail account explicitly in Outlook rather than relying on the subscription sign‑in:

    1. Open Outlook for Windows.
    2. Go to File > Account info.
    3. Select Account Settings > Account Settings (if using classic Outlook) or Accounts > Your accounts in the new Outlook.
    4. Under Email accounts, select Add Account.
    5. Enter the email address that should actually send and receive mail (either the Gmail address or the issued Outlook.com address) and select Continue.
    6. When prompted, enter the password and complete sign‑in.

If Outlook shows the wrong Outlook.com identity (for example, an outlook_[long series of letters and numbers]@outlook.com style address) or messages bounce, remove that account and re‑add it manually:

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Press Windows key + R, type outlook /profiles and select OK.
    3. In Choose Profile, select Options > New, give the profile a new name, and select OK.
    4. Choose Advanced options > Let me set up my account manually.
    5. Add the correct account (Gmail or Outlook.com) as IMAP or POP using the server settings from the provider, then select Connect and Done.
    6. In Choose Profile, select Set as default profile and OK.

If a non‑Microsoft email (like Gmail) is used as the Microsoft account identity and there is also a Microsoft 365 subscription on that same identity, premium Outlook features can be linked to the third‑party mailbox in the new Outlook:

    1. In new Outlook, go to View > View settings or File > Account info.
    2. Select Accounts > Your accounts.
    3. Choose the third‑party account (for example, Gmail) and select Manage.
    4. If available, select Link Accounts to connect it to the Microsoft 365 subscription with the same email identity.

This keeps the Microsoft 365 Family subscription on the Gmail‑based Microsoft account while allowing Outlook to send and receive mail from either the Gmail mailbox or the Outlook.com mailbox that was issued.
