SCCM - CMG In Place Upgrade

We are planning to upgrade remote devices to 1909 using OSD. Currently we do not have always on VPN or Direct access configured, just using Cisco VPN where user have to connect manually. The In-Place TS works perfectly as we pre-cache all the data. Since it needs user intervention to verify if the build process complete or not so planning to see if we can use CMG here with SCCM build 2006.

So the question is configuring a CMG would be any beneficial ? The only aspect i can think of is once the build is upgraded and sitting at the logon screen we can remote in and we get the status message update though CMG without any user.

Any other suggestions ?

Doing an in-place upgrade in on-prem vs internet has no difference and it works similar. For in-place upgrade on internet, you would need CMG.
The only difference is that, you cannot do remote control using ConfigMgr for internet based client with 2006 version but they continue to deliver the status messages for the deployment to the ConfigMgr for reporting purpose.

Thanks. But once the upgrade is complete by verifying the status message, can we not use Remote control to connect through CMG. As i read some MS docs saying that id the device is online on internet then i can use to connect using CMG. Is that not true here ?

    Hi,

Thank you for coming Microsoft MECM Q&A forum.

I concur with Eswar Koneti here. Client status and notifications is support in CMG and we will get the status message update though CMG. However, remote control over CMG is not supported in Configuration Manager version 2006, it's a technical preview feature. We may be able to see it in a future release of Configuration Manager.
