What is the problem? You made it more difficult. I can't even see the doc I want to screenshot!!! Guess Windows 11 is a prize. I'm seeing this same problem going back to 2024 and here it is two year later and your still having the problem. Can't you cut the garbage and leave things alone? Please do me a favor and tell me how you're going to fix this?

Hello Kathy Keating,

I understand your situation - pressing PrtScn now opens the Snipping Tool toolbar by default, instead of just copying the whole screen to the clipboard the way Windows 10 used to.

The good news is that Microsoft did keep a setting to switch it back to the classic behavior. To restore it, open Settings with Windows key + I, go to Accessibility on the left, scroll down to Keyboard, and turn off the toggle labeled "Use the Print screen key to open screen capture." After that, PrtScn will go straight back to copying the full screen to your clipboard, so you can paste it into Word, Paint, or an email with Ctrl + V exactly like before — no more dimmed screen or toolbar getting in the way of what you're trying to capture.

If it's useful, Alt + PrtScn copies only the active window to the clipboard, and Windows key + PrtScn saves a full-screen capture straight to your Pictures > Screenshots folder.

On Windows 11 there are multiple ways to capture the screen. If one way changed or stopped working, use one of these supported methods:

    1. Use Snipping Tool (recommended)
      1. Set up the screen so the document to capture is visible.
      2. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
      3. The screen will dim and a small toolbar appears at the top.
      4. Choose a mode:
        • Rectangular snip
        • Free-form snip
        • Window snip
        • Full-screen snip
      5. Select the area or window with the document.
      6. The screenshot is copied to the clipboard and a notification appears.
      7. Click the notification to open Snipping Tool, then use Save to store the image or Copy to paste it into another app.
    2. Use the PRINT SCREEN key to copy to clipboard
      1. Show the document on the screen the way it should appear in the screenshot.
      2. To capture the entire screen, press PRINT SCREEN.
      3. To capture only the active window (for example, just the document window), click that window, then press ALT + PRINT SCREEN.
      4. Open an app such as Word, Paint, or an email.
      5. Press CTRL + V to paste the screenshot.
    3. Use the Windows key shortcut for automatic saving
      • On many devices, pressing Windows logo key + PrtScn saves a full-screen screenshot directly to File Explorer → Pictures → Screenshots.
      • If the keyboard does not have a PrtScn key, some devices use Fn + Windows logo key + Spacebar to capture a screenshot.
    4. If pasting into Paint gives a blank/white image
      • This can be caused by very low color settings in the display driver.
      • Increase the color setting in the display settings to more than 16 colors, then try ALT + PRINT SCREEN and paste again.

If one shortcut was changed by an update or OEM setting, these alternatives still provide full screenshot capability and let the document be visible while capturing.
