Creating a document in Word 2016

When I want to create a new document, I go to the folder where I want the new document to be, I right click and chose New Microsoft Word Document, takes minimum of 5 minutes to open a link to the new document, way too slow.

I note the instructions to create a new document say to click on file then new to choose a template or a blank, however I can only find those screens if I'm already in a document.  When I open Word, I see New, but not the screen that lists all the activities including templates.  What I get after clicking file is a drop down that has about 5 choices, - Open a new Window - Open Command Prompt - Open PowerShell, etc. Doesn't make sense to me that I have to open a document in order to create another document, surely there must be a more direct route?   All help appreciated.  Thanks

I have a new Dell Inspirion 15, 5558 series, using Word 2016

When I press Ctrl + n, it opens Word again.  Yes, that is correct, I do not see the screen you have shown.  Only time I see that screen is if I open a document, then click on the file tab.  Thanks for your help.

Ctrl+N is a shortcut that bypasses the File | New screen and simply creates a new, blank document directly. On the other hand, if you right-click in a document folder and choose to create a Word document that way, you are never offered a choice of templates. So Word is working as designed.

Note that you can put a template file, or a link to a template file, for example on the desktop, if that helps. Double-cliking a template file would create a new document based on that template.

The screen shots are attached.  THanks for your help!  Yikes, I see no way to add an attachment, best I can do is insert an image.  there is no attachment icon for me to use.
