Ctrl S doesn't work initially in a word doc. It works in Excel. If I do File/Save or File/Save As then Ctrl S will work to save a document but only after initially saved using File/Save or /Save As

There was a patch designed to fix other Save issues (crashing on Save), so perhaps this update was responsible for solving your issue as well.

This may be a different issue but we've received word from the Office team that they detected there was an issue with crash on Save.  This impacts Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  They’ve deployed a new build with a fix.  If you are experiencing an issue with crashing on Save, please update your Office to the latest version.

Since running Word in Safe mode works around the problem, the underlying issue is (1) a damaged Normal template, (2) a poorly designed add-in, or (3) corrupt registry entries. In this list, (2) is the most likely cause. Note that uninstalling and reinstalling won't necessarily remove add-ins. To troubleshoot COM and Startup add-ins, see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/troubleshoot/word/issues-when-start-or-use-word.

    Dear Randyryan2
Thanks for participating in the Microsoft Community. I'm an Independent Advisor and I'll help you.

First, you have to verify if Word has Add-ins that could create this issue, so, run your Word in Safe Mode:
Find the shortcut icon for your Office application.
Press and hold the CTRL key and double-click the application shortcut.

If the issue still persists, you can repair you Office installation:

Do not hesitate to ask if you need more information.
I hope it has been useful to you.
    Regards,
    Renzo.
