Authentication methods needed to sync outlook emails in Apple Mail

I am unable to add my outlook e-mails to my apple MacBook. I keep getting an authentication error. I find it impossible to get through to Microsoft Support - Apple support were very helpful but advised the issue is with MS.

Can anybody help?

    Do you have 2FA enabled for the Microsoft account? What server names, ports and encryption are you specifying for the incoming and outgoing servers? Have you read discussions about it on Apple's web site? https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255662904?sortBy=rank

    If you temporarily disable 2FA does it work?

    Please post the error here exactly as it appears on your screen. Who is your mail provider? What type of account (POP, IMAP, Exchange) are you trying to add? Are you allowing Outlook to configure the account automatically or are you trying to configure it manually? At what point does the error appear?

    Are you setting up your account in Apple Mail or in Microsoft Outlook?

    Which type of account is this? @outlook.com, @gmail.com, or something else?

    Yes I have 2FA enabled - yes I have looked at the links and I have also had a conversation with Apple Support.

    They advise the issue is with Microsoft and that I need to speak to MS technical support - this seems impossible to do - any suggestion, I have tried the app and telephone and both do not result in getting through to technical support.
