I'm attempting to change my root site in the sharepoint admin center so I can delete the original root site. However whenever I attempt to make the change I get one of two error messages, "This site must be a team site or communication site. It can't be connected to a Microsoft 365 group." or, "This site is already the root site." Any help would be absolutely fantastic. Thank you to all!

Yeah, this is more than a little vague. You have to create a site without a connect M365 group:User's image

A publishing portal site for instance does create a M365 group automatically and should fix it. You can also go through the classic create a site collection portal through here (it opens as a pop-up if you choose browse templates) if the first option doesn't work.
