As title suggests the function keys for my laptop have stopped adjusting the brightness for my laptop. I can adjust by going into the settings fine but can't use the keys. I have updated all my display drivers but still no joy.

This seems to be a common issue with current versions of Windows 10. Many users have found relief through the following steps.

On your Key Board press Windows key + X
press M to open Device Manager
    expand Display adapters
right click on the current display adapter
    click Properties
    click on the Driver tab
click on Rollback driver if the option is available

If this does not work please try the following

right click on the current display adapter
    click Uninstall
check the box that says, "Delete the driver software for this device.”
    exit Device Manager
    restart your PC

On your Key Board press Windows key + X
press M to open Device Manager
click on "Action" at the top of the window
click on "Scan for Hardware changes"

Windows should automatically detect your display adapter and guide you through installing the most appropriate driver for your device.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

    Hi Alisdair,

Do the other function keys work?

What’s the make and model of your laptop?

We’ll try to figure this out!

Crazy how it’s only the brightness keys...

Ok, and when did this behavior start? After an update? I’m not super familiar with that model, but I’m researching trying to see if I can dig enough to find the answer.

Also, What version of windows are you running? Click start, and type “winver” and hit enter, a box should pop up. 1709? 1803? Let me know.

If that doesn't help you can try to Rollback Windows
In order to rid yourself of these issues and return to your previous stable build it is recommended that you RollBack to your previous version of Windows. To do this please follow these steps

Open Start > Settings > Update & security > Recovery > under Go back to my previous version of Windows 10, click Get started.

    or

Press Control + Alt + Delete
    Click Sign out

At the Sign In screen, hold down the shift key on your keyboard while clicking the Power button on the screen
Continue to hold down the shift key while clicking Restart
Continue to hold down the shift key until the Advanced Recovery Options menu appears

    Click Troubleshoot

    Click Advanced options

Click Go back to the previous version of Windows

This information was obtained from the following official Microsoft Help document
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/...

    And from the following thread

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

NOTE: when using recovery options be sure to watch for and select options to "keep your personal files and folders" that way you will preserve your important data

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance
