PC shows BitLocker recovery screen

Question

When my PC started today it goes goes to the BilLocker recovery screen.

I have been through the recovery process to find my recovery code but it is not registered with MS. The pc was purchased from HP and was already set up .

If it was already set up when you bought it, the key would have been in the first person's Microsoft account.

Did it say that your key is incorrect?

Was the computer set up for you by the store person?

BitLocker encryption is preventing Windows from starting without the correct 48‑digit recovery key. If the key is not registered with any Microsoft or organizational account, there is no supported way to unlock the drive without that key.

Follow these steps to be sure every possible location has been checked:

1. Note the Recovery Key ID
   • On the blue BitLocker screen, write down the first 8 digits of the recovery key ID. This helps match the correct key if multiple keys exist.
2. Check your Microsoft account
   • On another device, go to https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey.
   • Sign in with the Microsoft account that might have been used when the device was first set up.
   • Look for a key whose Key ID matches the first 8 digits shown on your BitLocker screen and whose device name matches your PC.
3. Check work or school account (if ever used)
   • If the PC was ever joined to a work or school organization, on another device go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey.
   • Sign in with that work/school account.
   • Select Devices, expand your device, then choose View BitLocker Keys and match the Key ID.
4. Check local backups
   • Look for:
     • A printed BitLocker recovery key among your important papers.
     • A USB flash drive that might contain a .txt file with the recovery key.
5. If the key cannot be found
   • Microsoft Support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.
   • If the key is not in any Microsoft/work/school account, not printed, and not on a USB drive, the only remaining option is to reset the device using Windows recovery options. This will remove all files on the encrypted drive.
   • Use another PC to create Windows installation or recovery media, boot from it on the locked PC, and choose a reset/reinstall option. Be aware this results in data loss on the BitLocker‑protected drive.

Because the device was preconfigured by HP, the original owner or organization that set it up might have stored the key in their account. If someone else initially set up the PC, their Microsoft, work, or school account should also be checked for the key.
