Security Update KB 5073724 causes random freezes

Hello,

Ever since the latest security update (see title) , my system freezes at random.
And I have to press and hold the power button to shut down the system.

I cannot uninstall the update from CMD/Powershell/Safe Mode or the regular way, as it says it is an essential thing.

This is the windows version:
Windows 10 22H2, OS Build 19045.6809

I don't expect a solution from anyone, but I do hope that someone from the dev team is seeing this and will look for a fix, or even offer a way to undo this update as it breaks more than it solves.

There is also a thread on reddit where people experience similar problems with Steam and Discord... I only have it when I work in Maya , Substance or DaVinci for a while (haven't tested Discord or Steam) but in less than an hour it will happen and it is getting pretty annoying.

Thanks!

This is just getting silly ... I am on my 2nd system restore in as many days... just because these c#nts at Microslop keep forcing updates THAT BREAK MY SYSTEM .

It ignores all my hard blocks ... and it is just getting silly now.

Again these so called updates don't just slow down my machine, it breaks software that I use for 3D and texturing... I can't work like this.

Is there a way to completely opt out from Microslop update systems on Windows 10 pro or are these asshats keep forcing their way in?

Never will I ever buy a Microslop Windows machine ever again ...

To anyone suffering from the same thing, here is the "solution" that works for me:

    • Do an in place repair /windows upgrade, there are tutorials on how to exactly do this , but the only caveat to this is that you need to disconnect from the internet once you have created the installation media, before going through with teh install , as otherwise it will run windows update and install it again
    • Once you have run through the process, click on the windows icon and type winver and run it, it will show you what version you are running .. it needs to be below "19045.6809".
    • Now in my case I went through the hassle of setting policies in teh registry editor (tap the windows symbol and type "regedit") and in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE => SOFTWARE => Policies => Microsoft => Windows => WIndows Update , I added these entries DWORD(32 bit):
DeferQualityUpdates = 1, DeferQualityUpdatesPeriodInDays = 365, ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate = 1. ... but that didn't do anything as it still forcibly installed that HORRIBLE JANUARY UPDATE , so you may want to skip this step.
    • Reconnect to the internet and install updates, now in my case it installed the latest update again, but because it was within 10 days I could uninstall it.
So I basically installed all the updates and then upon reboot , disconnected from the internet again and uninstalled the last update.
    • Then I opened a command prompt (tap the windows icon and type "cmd"and run as administrator) and ran these commands:

    sc config wuauserv start= disabled

    sc config usosvc start= disabled

    sc config bits start= disabled

I think this completely disables windows update, but at this point I am okay with that, as for the past two weeks it caused nothing but grief and I am done with OS related nonsense, if I wanted to muck about with an OS every other day I would've installed Linux.

    • finally as a sanitycheck I ran this command in command prompt:
      dism /online /get-packages | findstr 5073724

It should return nothing , if it does then Windows has already downloaded it and will probably run the installer silently upon reboot ( I mean why give people options on untested updates right?) ... if that happens disconnect from the internet, uninstall and repeat the steps again

Anyway that is my solution and Substance , DaVinci and Maya work normally again (no system hangs anymore) ...

Hi, thanks for the detailed information. As per checking and analyzing the event files you have, there are general errors in the event files. Kindly follow the steps below for us to fix the issue:

Method 1. Do a clean boot:

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.
    • On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.
    • Close Task Manager.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.

If none of the above solutions work, I suggest doing an in-place upgrade, wherein it will update the device to the latest version and repair all issues without deleting any files.

Note: before doing this, make sure to create a restore point:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027538/windows-create-a-system-restore-point

    2. Select Download Now, and select Run. You need to be an administrator to run this tool.
    3. On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
    4. On the What do you want to do? page, select Upgrade this PC now, and then select Next.
    5. After downloading and installing, it should fix the issue.

Hi, I'm Bernard, a fellow Windows user. I'm happy to help!

Since it is a security update, it cannot be uninstalled. However, you can perform a system restore to revert to the previous version. Moreover, can you please check the System logs on the PC so I can further examine the root cause of the issue?

To share the System logs, please follow the steps in the link below:

Press the Windows key + X, then select "Event Viewer"

Click the drop-down of "Windows logs"

Right-click System > click Filter Current logs > Check: Critical, Warning, and Error > Hit OK

On the right pane, click "Save Filtered Log File As..."

Save the System logs file to your desktop and share it by following the steps from the link:

Note: You can also use your preferred cloud storage to upload and share the logs.
