Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
OneDrive and Microsoft storage subscriptions do not offer formal “payment extensions,” but there are a few concrete steps that can protect files and resolve the overdue status.
- Confirm why the “files will be erased” message was sent
- The message appears if:
- OneDrive hasn’t been used in two years, and/or
- The storage limit has been exceeded.
- Details: Why did I get a message saying my files will be erased?
- The message appears if:
- Reactivate the account before the deadline
- Sign in to OneDrive before the date shown in the email/notification to stop files from being erased: Sign in.
- After signing in, check that the storage limit is not exceeded.
- Handle the overdue subscription payment
- If the subscription is past due because a payment failed:
- Go to Services & subscriptions at https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account used for OneDrive.
- Find the past-due subscription and select Pay now.
- Update or add a payment method if needed, then complete the payment.
- Guidance: Pay for a past-due Microsoft subscription
- If the subscription is past due because a payment failed:
- If storage or quota hasn’t updated after payment
- It can take up to 24 hours for storage allowances to update after purchasing more storage or a subscription.
- If the account was locked, it can take up to 2 hours after purchasing additional storage for the new quota to show. If it still hasn’t updated after 4 hours, contact support using the link in the article: What is Microsoft cloud storage?
- If sign-in or account selection is a problem
- If a message appears saying the email is used with more than one Microsoft account, choose the correct personal account (not the work/school account) when signing in. See the section “I see a message ‘It looks like this email is used with more than one account from Microsoft’” in the OneDrive article.
- If direct help from a person is needed
- For account and billing help, use the online support options instead of phone only:
- Visit Account & Billing Help or Contact Microsoft Support, then choose the product (Microsoft 365/OneDrive), select a billing/payment category, and use Chat with a support agent or Call me back.
- These options are described under Contact Support in the OneDrive help articles.
- For account and billing help, use the online support options instead of phone only:
Until payment can be made, ensure the account is signed into and, if possible, reduce stored data below the free quota (for example by downloading and removing some files) to avoid hitting the storage limit while waiting for funds.
