This article refers to ad formats that are eligible to serve in Copilot. To learn more about how Copilot in the Microsoft Adverting Platform can assist you with your campaigns, see Copilot in Microsoft Advertising Platform.
Copilot in Bing is an AI-powered web assistant providing a conversational chat experience that finds relevant answers in response to people's queries by summarizing web search results. Copilot also generates creative content, such as poems, jokes, and letters. Microsoft Advertising serves ads in varying formats which are displayed in Copilot's responses.
Ads in Copilot are automatically created using your campaign's existing assets, including text and images. All eligible campaign and ad types are automatically opted in to serving in Copilot. Advertisers cannot opt out of serving ads, and there's no guarantee that their ads will be displayed in Copilot. However, continuing to optimize your existing search-based campaigns for better performance overall will extend into the Copilot experience.
Note
Negative keyword matching applies to Copilot and works the same as it does for web searches on the Micrsoft Advertising Network. This means that your ads won't display against the negative keywords that you've added to your account, campaigns, or ad groups. See Negative keyword matching to learn more about negative keyword matching in Copilot.
Note
Microsoft Advertising does not currently support specific metrics for ads served in Copilot.

Frequently asked questions
How are ads in Copilot chosen?
We consider the context of the entire conversation, not only the last prompt to better connect brands to people's conversations in a more helpful way. After Copilot has resolved the initial query, we leverage user information to surface ads that are relevant to them while reaching the audiences that the advertisers are targeting.
What brand safety tools are in place for advertisers?
In addition to the usual brand safety constraints and policies that apply to Search advertising, we leverage the principles of Responsible AI to ensure Copilot adheres to the level of trust and security our customers expect. The AI models flag different types of potentially harmful content in search queries, chat queries, or generated responses, which signal Copilot to take action. In such cases, ads are not shown in any flagged conversations. Copilot will also honor any negative keywords you have in place for your campaigns to ensure ads will not show with content that is inappropriate for your brand.
Can ads for restricted categories serve in Copilot (such as pharmaceutical advertising and advertising for financial services)?
If an ad can serve on Microsoft Bing, it can also serve in Copilot. Ad copy will not be truncated, so for financial services and other industries that need to specify terms and conditions on their ads, the ad copy will continue to show. We recommend advertisers use disclaimers in ads for all restricted or sensitive categories. In pharmaceutical advertising, prescription ads will not be shown unless specific disclaimers are used.
What can advertisers do to better optimize for more exposure in Copilot?
Search ads must include a logo to be eligible to show in Copilot. We also highly recommend using image extensions to make your Search ads stand out more in the experience. The best way to increase exposure in Copilot is to adopt Performance Max campaigns. This provides Copilot with the greatest number of assets and variables to match your ads to relevant consumer intent. Using Performance Max optimizes performance for Copilot.
