Then it looks like you will have to open the template and use Save As. This is not a desirable method but might work.

I am creating a simple template with the footer saved in a custom font. If I save the file (embedding the font) as a docx it is preserved. If I save it as a dotx, every new document based on that does NOT carry the font. Is it by design?
Even selecting "all new documents" instead of this document does not preserve the font.

What happens if you take the .docx file with your footer and the embedded font and save it as a template?
Hello,
Thank you for choosing Microsoft Community.
Did you manually changed the footer font or did you changed the Footer style as well?
If you have changed font but not the footer style, you may change the footer style according to your requirements and save the Word template again as dotx.
Follow the steps below to change the footer font.
Open Word> click on Insert> click on Footer. (If you are creating new footer choose the option, but if you are wanted to edit the footer, click on edit Footer).

Thank you.
If I take this file to a computer without the font, and I re-open the file as a template (file - open) I see the correct font, but if I double click on the template to create a docx (as a template should be used) then I get the wrong font.
The template itself carries the right font, not the files created from it.
I have done as you have said and I got the same result, documents based on that template show a wrong font.
I have set the correct font as a default for the footer style as well as created a new style with that default font.
Both cases did not work.
When I simply create a document (docx instead of dotx) the font is moved from computer to computer easily, regardless of the fact that the 'footer' style has been set with that font.
