Word can't connect to OneDrive file

After a hard drive failure earlier in the years I've taken to saving the current versions of a large (c.120,000 word) file in the OneDrive folder on my computer, All has been working as expected and files have been synchronizing with the cloud smoothly until today.

This morning, I clicked on my Word 365 icon (as usual) then tried to load yesterday's file which (as usual) was listed to the left. I received the error message:

We can't connect to http://d.docs.live.net/29f8b87d50e7fa79/, <filename>. Please make sure you're using the correct web address. Despite the fact that Word has retained the last used filename, the file is not in either the OneDrive folder on my computer or in my One Drive account when I access it directly.

I have two questions.

  1. Since I did a lot of tedious work on the file yesterday, I'm anxious to get it back it at all possible. Is there any hope of doing so?

2. I have now lost confidence in this supposedly safer was of saving my files. Can anyone reassure that it really is more secure or should I go back to my old method of saving to my hard-drive and making backups copies in the traditional way?

I've tried all the options in the recommended article (which, incidentally, is out of date since it does not include any reference to Windows 10 or the use of One Drive). None of the suggestions helped me recover my Word file.

Given my experience, I obviously cannot agree with your assertion that 'Saving files on OneDrive is more secure way.' It was because I had been assured that was the case that I took to saving the a 120,000-word Word file on One Drive. Now I will have to fall back on an earlier draft, do several extra days of work to get back to where I was, and will not, of course, be able to trust One Drive again. Either it is 100% secure or it is not secure. The advantage of making one's own backups is that we have full control of the process and only have ourselves to blame if something goes wrong.

    Thank you Harsha

I've already checked the things in the otherwise helpful article.

The issue relates to one specific life in my desktop One Drive folder which I was working on yesterday. On powering up this morning, it was still the most recent file in the files listed when I loaded Word but, on trying to load it, I received the error message I described above. So Word has kept a record of the filename and file-path but One Drive appears to have 'lost it'.
