Word 2010 Insert Picture Always Opens to Pictures

Windows 10 Pro

Office 2010

When I click on Word 2010 "Insert Picture", it Always Opens to Pictures, instead of where it last was last located, like almost everything else in the world does.  Unlike "most people" I actually store some images in Client folders that contain all kinds of different files.

Here is the nightmare.  I take multiple screenshots using Greenshot that is set to always ask for where I want to store them and it always opens the last location used.  However, when I want to insert those screenshots into a Word document, after the first navagation to where the screenshots are located, I go back to Word 2010 Insert Picture to get the next screenshot, but instead of opening to the folder with the screenshots, it opens to Pictures everytime.  I went through the File\Options, but didn't find anything.

You can't imagine how frustrating this is.

And before you tell me to upgrade to a newer Office, I won't because they made it better and it got worse.  Office 2010 works for te types of work I do, and it is harder to workin the newer versions.  One of the main reasons it the Quick Access tool bar icons got larger and QA can no longer hold my extensive line up. Having to constantly open ribbons is a waste of time.

Here is the path and Key from Suzanne's answer. Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Options - PICTURE-PATH

This is a Registry/Options setting. As long as no path is specified for pictures, Word will open to the last-used folder. Go to File | Options | Advanced: File Locations and make sure the location for "Images" is blank. If you aren't able to do this through the Options (Word doesn't allow you to clear the path), it will have to be done through the Windows Registry. The likely path is Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Options; I can't tell you the exact key because I don't have it (my "Images" location is empty), but I would guess that deleting that key would do the trick (be sure to export it first in case you need to restore it).

Alternatively, you could, at least temporarily, set the folder you're using as the default location. For more on that, see https://www.howtogeek.com/265902/how-to-change-the-default-insert-picture-location-in-microsoft-word/ (written for a later version, but the process is the same).

Here, with Word 2010, after navigating to a folder other than Pictures to insert a picture, the next time I use Insert Picture, it is that folder to which I navigated that is opened.

Without access to Word 2010 to test behavior, my only suggestion would be to place a shortcut to your Screenshots folder in the Pictures folder.

Right  - or a link in QA.

It got me thinking.  I don't like to use drag and drop because it can be too mistake prone, so it didn't come to until you answered.  So, duh, drag and drop into Word doc!d

    Thanks Keith.
