An Online Word Document Keeps Asking to Reconnect

Hi all, I have a Word document that multiple people (on multiple different networks) are trying to use on Teams. I'd say three or four different users are trying to access it. The document will open in Teams (and online if I try to open it in a web browser) but after a couple of minutes, it asks us to reconnect.

This is only happening with this one document, and is not happening with any other Word documents that we share (as far as I can tell). Sometimes it does not open as an editable document, and either way we only have a couple of minutes to type before it asks to reconnect.

I think it's safe to rule out our internet connection, since it's being opened from three different networks (two home networks and one work network).

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Dear Saverio,

I am Renzo, as an Independent Advisor and Office user, I'll help you with your question.

Is the affected file too large?

Does the file has linked external connections to others Office files?

How many users are co working with the file at same time?

For test purpose, you could create a copy of the files without formatting, so try following process:

  1. In desktop Word app, open affected file > copy all content with Ctrl+C, then create a new file and Paste with the option "Keep the Text Only", then check out the file behavior.

Word for the web has some limitations, you can compare between local app in below link:

Thanks Renzo! It seems that the file was too large. It wasn't linking to any external files, but it was easily one of the largest Word docs I've ever seen. Thanks for your help.
