Broken Links in Word Document

Anonymous

I pasted some excel tables into a word document. The tables were posted as a linked microsoft excel worksheet object, so that any changes in the excel table automatically feed through to the word document.

However, when I reopen the word document at a later time, most of the links are broken. I am not using sharepoint or anything. The files are on a drive on a server(?) (I believe)

In the screenshot below, the first link is fine, but all the rest have been corrupted/broken and will need to be redone.

Why is this happening?

    Hi KevinEllis8,

Welcome to Microsoft Office Community Forum. Thank you for sharing your concern with us today and we hope that all is well.

We understand how important it is for you link Excel Worksheet/s to a Word Document for your work and to make sure that the file is up to date and synced with the same data. Let's do our best to get this resolved or addressed in timely manner.

As per description, you have pasted tables from Excel Worksheets. At the later time, you received message for update, change or break link/s. There could be a few we can say that cause this, one which the system will read the file (Worksheet) is up-to-date when it has been recently opened or edited or modified. There will be instances that the linked file was moved to another location, experiencing issues opening/accessing or corruption on the link file or could have been the formula of the Worksheet needs to re-run new update. Know more from the reply of Tom Ogilvy in Excel links not updating when destination and source files are closed and to the Support Article - Control when external references (links) are updated.

To fix the issue, please save a back up first - you may save same file/s to another location (flash drive/hard drive/cloud storage) also you can send a copy to yourself via email.

Here are the steps you can perform to resolve this, Open the Excel and save few changes. Reopen the Word document and select Update Now to all links. Save it and reopen. Let us know if the issue persist.

This would be our suggestion, you may also try to recreate the Word document, copy the contents on problematic Word document and paste it on new blank document. Making sure everything is all set, paste it with no formatting or keep text only. Try to redo the process of linking the Excel Worksheet. Save the copy and reopen file.

Kindly let us know, if there is any misunderstanding of our description by sending us a reply.

We look forward to your response. If you have other clarifications about this matter, you can get back to us by replying to this post.

    Sincerely,

    Kathy A.
