I asked this question earlier, but now have narrowed the issue further to the GPU on two system - Details Follow:

Problem: Over remote desktop connection, memory spikes on host computer to 100% & Excel freezes

Problem does NOT occur when GPU is removed or disabled in hardware manager

Same Problem on two systems (See Specs Below) using Excel Workbook over remote connection.

  • Local users on various system platforms have no problems with same workbook.
  • Remote user on home system (same used as remote client) has no problems with same workbook.

Problem Description:

Using the scroll wheel only, scrolling up and down on sheet 1 of the workbook for a few minutes the following happens:

  • Memory usage climbs quickly and pegs at 100% per Task Manager Performance Tab
  • Power Usage freezes at VERY HIGH per Task Manager
  • Worksheet becomes non-responsive & unusable

Remote Connection Information:

  • Remote connection is via Remote Desktop Connection client through a Sophos VPN to company network.
  • CLIENT: Remote side Internet Connection 300 Down / 30 Up
  • HOST: Company side Internet Connection 100 Down / 100 Up

Workbook Information (Sheet 1)

  • 20 columns/582 rows
  • In use without problems for over 6 years by up to 20 users
  • 100% Free of Volatile Functions
  • No Circular References
  • Automatic Calculations set
  • File Size is about 4 MB
  • Lots of Conditional Formatting, VBA Code

Cures tried with no positive results

  • Excel in Safe Mode
  • Hardware Acceleration Enabled and Disabled in Excel options
  • Multi-Thread calculations Enabled and Disabled in Excel options
  • Excel Open & Repair – no issues found
  • Remote Session Environment: “Use the hardware default graphics adapter for all Remote Desktop Services sessions” Enabled
  • Remote Session Environment: “Use the hardware default graphics adapter for all Remote Desktop Services sessions” Disabled
  • Deleted all Macros, and Data in cells – only cell colors & navigation buttons remained

I think we are missing the core issue:

Problem only exists under these conditions - and happens with two different remote Host systems.

    1. GPU enabled
    2. Remote Access

All other people with local access - up to 15 - Have NO issue with the SAME spreadsheet.

Remotely: No problems with the spreadsheet if GPU is disabled.

Analysis:- No problem with Spreadsheet - problem is EXCEL + GPU +. REMOTE CONNECTION

This started with Windows Update at the end of April 2022.

    Please consider this.

    Thanks

    Hi Bill Arthur

    Thanks for the clarification.

It seems that all these issues only happened after Windows Update at the end of April 2022, right?

System updates do cause some incompatibilities, and obviously these are potential issues. If you need to fix these issues, we also recommend that you check to see if the issue persists by uninstalling the KB updates from the end of April until now.

    Windows 10 uninstall update

Click the Win key > Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update > Advanced Options > View Update History > Uninstall Updates > View the installation time in the pop-up window > Double click to uninstall the KB update installed at the end of April

    Windows 11 uninstall update

Click the Win key >> Settings >> Select Windows Update from the left directory >> Select Update History >> Uninstall Update >> Double-click KB Update Uninstall in the pop-up window

At the same time, in order to maintain the stability and compatibility of the system, we also recommend that you disable the Windows Update service to stop the update. Of course, if there is a more stable Windows KB update in the future, you can open it at any time.

    1. Press Win + R keys together to launch the Run dialog. Type services.msc in the text box  and press Enter. It will open the service manager.
    2. Scroll down to the bottom and you will see a service " Windows Update " in the list
    3. Double-click the service and change its Startup Type to Disabled .

After completing the above steps, restart the computer to see if the problem persists. If there is any update, feel free to contact us

    Hi Bill Arthur

    Welcome to Microsoft Community

We apologize for the inconvenience and we will try our best to help you

According to the category Microsoft 365 and Office / Excel you posted, we can know that your problem is " connecting via VPN remote desktop, it will freeze when using Excel, and the memory will take up 100% " If my understanding is wrong, please feel free to Correct me. I can understand that it is frustrated at times that something goes wrong, and the fact that it has not been resolved is troubling.

Although there is no fixed reason, there are many situations in which Excel can behave this way. Before we start looking for solutions, let's identify some areas worth investigating

Test Excel files in the cleanest possible test environment

Sometimes environmental factors are also one of the reasons why Excel occupies GPU and memory too high. If it is convenient for you, try to open a blank Excel document through a remote link, and try sliding the pulley to see if it will cause these GPUs to occupy. full and memory issues. Assuming everything turns out to be OK, you may need to trace the cause back to the workbook itself, which may be because Excel files can exist on your computer for a long time. They are upgraded from one version to another, and often moved from one user to another. Often, the user inherits the Excel file, but does not know what is contained in the file. The following conditions can cause performance or crash issues:

    • A formula that references an entire column.
    • Reference an array formula with an uneven number of elements in the argument.
    • Hundreds or thousands of hidden or 0 height and width objects.
    • Too many styles due to frequent copying and pasting between workbooks.
    • Too many and invalid names defined.
    • Contains lots of conditional formatting and VBA code

For steps to clean up Excel workbooks so they take up less memory, please refer to the Microsoft Docs community guide, click here

    File storage location

Moving the file locally will help determine if there is a problem with the file, or where the file is saved. Problems can occur when you save Excel files over a network or web server. It is better to keep the file locally. According to the same workbook you mentioned, there is no problem with GPU and memory usage when used by local users. So we can basically confirm that the Excel program is in the local location, and there is no problem with running these workbooks.

Perform selective startup to determine if a program, process, or service conflicts with Excel

When you start Windows, several applications and services start automatically and then run in the background. These applications and services may interfere with other software on your PC. Performing a selective boot (also known as a "clean boot") can help you identify problems with conflicting applications. Because according to what you said, it seems that the problem only occurs in two machines with specific devices, and other users are using it normally, to perform selective boot, please select one of the following links according to your Windows version, and then follow the instructions in the article Steps to operate:

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Selective startup is used to help identify problematic processes, services, or applications that conflict with Excel.

Disclaimer: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem. These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by step so that it will help you get you back on track.

If there is any update, please feel free to contact us.
