pagination problem: white space above footnotes

Anonymous

As can be seen in the figure, there is quite some space above the footnotes and under the text; there seems to be no reason why the next half sentence is automatically moved to the next page. I have deselected all pagination options for this paragraph. I have also tried to use "exact" line spacing. I have searched for this problem and although several topics were found with very similar problems, I have found no solution for this...

Sharing the document is unhandy (very large) and it is unpublished material. A representative sample can be found here: https://github.com/DinantKistemaker/sample-problem-word

This is not true, at least not in in my case. If I turn on the window/orphan control is send one extra sentence to the next page making the white space above the separator even bigger.

    Hi,

This seems not to be a solution to my problem. There is (seems) nothing wrong with the separator. As can be seen in the figure, it is a pagenation problem. Other pages in the document are fine.

    Best,

    Dinant

    Hello

I’m Adeyemi and I’d be happy to help you with your question.

It seems that you are experiencing an issue with excessive white space above the first footnote on each page in Microsoft Word. This issue can occur when the footnote and endnote separators have extra space after them or even extra carriage returns

One way to fix this issue is to enable the display of non-printing characters by clicking on the ¶ icon in the Standard toolbar. Then, switch to Draft view and select View > Footnotes from the main menu bar. In the dropdown menu, select Footnote separator. If you see extra carriage returns (shown as ¶), delete them. If there is a larger-than-usual space below the separator line, select Format > Paragraph and set Space After to zero. Repeat these steps for the Endnote separator by selecting All endnotes from the dropdown menu and then selecting Endnote separator https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/excessive-empty-space-above-first-footnote-on-each/02d0ac31-b145-4545-a89e-fc1dc928fe63.

Another way to fix this issue is to reset the Footnote Separator. To do this, switch to Draft View (via the View tab of the ribbon) and then go to the References tab and in the Footnotes section, click on Show Notes and then from the dropdown, select Footnote Separator and then click on the Reset button. This should remove any Space before the footnote separator or any empty paragraphs that may have been inserted before it https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/word-2016-unwanted-white-space-above-footnote/ccc8f40e-d6d0-4469-8087-cefae92f0937.

    I hope this helps!
