How to display Quebec-French trademark symbols 🅫 (superscript MD) and 🅪 (superscript MC) in MS Word?

In Canada, the French equivalent for the ® (Registered trademark) symbol is:

Unicode Character “🅫” (U+1F16B) - Marque déposée

The French equivalent of the ™ (trademark) symbol is:

Unicode Character “🅪” (U+1F16A) - Marque commercial

These are distinct symbols, not superscript characters or combinations of individual unicode raised letters.

We are a Google shop and we have lots of Google Docs documents with these symbols which render fine in Google Docs (and in all modern browsers). However, certain vendors/contractors prefer we share content with them in .docx files.

I tried downloading one of our documents to MS Word (Mac, 2024) and these two characters don't render. I tried pretty much every font and cannot find one that renders these two characters as anything other than a box.

Does anyone know how to get these symbols to render correctly in MS Word without having to replace all instances with something that isn't the actual trademark symbol?

In the meantime I will have to resort to sharing documents as PDFs with our vendors/contractors if they don't want to use our Google Docs files.

Thanks,

    Dear chcsep

    Welcome to Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing the details of your issue. After reviewing the information provided and conducting tests in my environment, I’d like to share my findings and recommendations. The two special characters you are using:

    • 🅪 (U+1F16A – Marque commerciale)
    • 🅫 (U+1F16B – Marque déposée)

belong to the extended Unicode block (Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement). Unfortunately, the default fonts available on macOS (such as San Francisco, Helvetica, Times New Roman, Arial, etc.) do not support this Unicode block. Additionally, Microsoft Word on macOS does not implement a fallback mechanism similar to Google Docs or modern browsers.

As a result, if the selected font does not support these characters, Word will display them as empty boxes.

    You can follow these steps:

    • If installing fonts is not feasible, exporting the document as a PDF will preserve the characters and ensure accurate display across all devices.

I hope this information is helpful. Please try these steps and let us know if you encounter any issues or require further assistance. We are happy to support you.

    Hi,

You need to use a font with support for Unicode Extended Characters like Quivira and/or YOzFontN.

    You’ll find Quivira at http://www.quivira-font.com/files/Quivira.otf

You’ll find YOzFontN in a zip file found at http://yozvox.web.fc2.com/YOzStd.7z
