when did the snipping tool force a capture, save or copy selection rather than opening into snipping tool editor?

I recently noticed this change. previously when i used the snipping tool it would automaticall open the "snipped" screen into the editor and then I could save the screen capture, edit or copy as I saw fit.

now it has this capture drop down which says capture, save to or copy only. It means i now have an extra step to capture it and then get a notification to open the snippet editor where as previously it just when into the editor and I could then copy or save. WHY?????

....and how do i change it back?

I had a user with this issue and found the fix.

You need to open Snipping Tool with the hotkey Shift+Windows Key+S

On the initial bar where you can change settings, the is an icon for Cropping.

    User's image

Make sure Cropping is off and not highlighted.

I would screenshot the whole bar, but an open snipping tool window is one of the few things that will not show up in a snip.

The Crop option only shows up when using the hotkey and the setting will persist until manually turned off.

Quite the silly UI if you ask me.

If rolling back is no longer an option, try to submit a feedback. This is exactly the kind of issue that they expect users to raise.

Use Feedback Hub (this is the one Microsoft monitors)

    Press Win + F

    • Or search Feedback Hub in Start

Sign in with your Microsoft account (if prompted)

    Click Report a problem

    When asked for a category:

    Category: Apps

    Subcategory: Snipping Tool

This routes it to the correct product team.

You’ll get the best traction if you’re specific and calm. You can paste this verbatim if you like:

Title: Snipping Tool no longer opens editor immediately after capture

Feedback: In recent Windows 11 builds, Snipping Tool captures now run in the background and require clicking a notification before the editor opens.

Previously, Win+Shift+S opened the editor immediately, allowing quick edit, copy, or save without extra steps. This change adds friction, breaks long-standing workflows, and removes user choice.

Please restore an option to always open the editor after capture (editor-first mode), or provide a setting to disable notification-first behavior.

Attach the screenshot you shared and mention that the editor-first toggle no longer exists.

After submitting, search Feedback Hub for “Snipping Tool editor”. Upvote similar reports

Microsoft weighs volume + upvotes more than individual comments.

Your Snipping Tool settings are normal. There is no longer a built-in way to force “editor opens immediately” only workarounds (registry / task scheduler / third-party tools) can change the behavior now.

Your screenshot is actually proof that you’re on the newer design. You can either adapt the new behavior or roll back Windows if the option is available.

    How to check

    • Settings
    • System
    • Recovery
    • Look for Go back

If you see “Go back” → you can revert to the previous build If it’s missing or greyed out → this option is gone. Even if you roll back the Windows build, Snipping Tool may still auto-update again, because it’s delivered through the Microsoft Store.

Thank for sharing the details, David! Can you restore the old “always open editor” behavior?

    Yes, mostly.

    Open Snipping Tool

    Click ⋯ (Settings)

    Turn ON:

    • “Automatically open Snipping Tool after capture”

    Turn OFF (optional but helpful):

    • “Automatically save screenshots”

Even with this enabled, Windows still shows the notification first, but the editor opens as soon as you click it.

See if this helps. If you need further assistance just let me know.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly

The change you are experiencing with the Snipping Tool is likely due to updates made in Windows 11. The Snipping Tool has undergone various changes, including the introduction of a new interface that allows for more options when capturing screenshots. This includes a capture dropdown that provides options to capture, save, or copy selections directly, rather than automatically opening the snipped image in the editor.

As for reverting to the previous behavior where the snipped image automatically opened in the editor, there is no specific setting mentioned in the current documentation that allows you to change this back to the old functionality. It appears that this is part of the new design and workflow introduced in the latest versions of the Snipping Tool.

If you have feedback regarding this change, you might consider using the feedback option within the Snipping Tool to express your preferences for future updates.
