Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
The Xbox profile is part of the same personal Microsoft account that is used for Windows, Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, OneDrive, Skype, and other consumer services. It is not a separate account that can be deleted independently; closing the underlying Microsoft account would also remove access to all these services.
To remove or reduce exposure instead of deleting the whole account:
- Review and secure the Microsoft account
- Run a full antivirus/malware scan on the PC first (for Windows 10/11, use Windows Defender as described in the guidance below).
- After the scan, change the Microsoft account password and ensure it is strong.
- Review security settings and sign out everywhere to invalidate existing sessions.
- Sign out the Microsoft account everywhere
- Go to the Microsoft account security dashboard’s Advanced security options.
- Use Sign out everywhere so the account is signed out of browsers, apps, and devices (except Xbox consoles, which must be signed out separately).
- Manage devices and services
- Use the Microsoft account dashboard to review devices and services associated with the account and remove anything not recognized.
- If the goal is to completely remove the consumer account (including Xbox)
- Follow the “How to close your Microsoft account” process. This will close the entire Microsoft account, which also removes access to Xbox, Outlook.com, OneDrive, Skype, Microsoft Teams Free, and other consumer services tied to that identity.
- Before closing, export or back up any important data (email, OneDrive files, Teams data, etc.).
If Xbox is not being used, simply leaving the Xbox profile unused and focusing on securing the Microsoft account (password, malware cleanup, sign-out everywhere, and device review) is sufficient from an account-security perspective.
