How to fix page numbers on Table of Contents in Word Online

I am using Office 365. And I have ToC like this:

User's image

This table of contents start at page number 2 and ends at page number 5. The issue is that Executive summary then starts at page number 5 as shown below:
User's image

But ToC shows page number 2 for this. It works fine and updates in Desktop version but fails in online version. There should be a solution for this in online version. Please inform

I am sorry, but I cannot tell you how to do this in Word online, or that you can do it in Word online. Word online was designed and remains an ancillary program for those using the desktop applications. It can't do what you want.

For documents that are important or in any way complex, use the desktop application for creation and any editing.

The Different Programs from Microsoft named "Word." a pdf https://addbalance.com/word/download.htm#MicrosoftWordPrograms

The online and mobile apps are suitable for short non-complex documents (i.e., class or meeting notes). You can use them to view and print documents created and edited in the Online applications.

Microsoft is not hearing about your problems from what you post here. You are discussing a problem with your fellow users here. We can give good advice about how to work with Word as it is and give suggestions for making it work properly.

Designers and their supervisors do see feedback. (You will almost certainly not get a direct response to that feedback but they do see it.)

    Here is more about that:

I suggest using the public feedback portal so other users can see your feedback, comment and vote. If you want, you can post the URL of your feedback with your question here to lead others with the same problem to your feedback. Be the “squeaky wheel” that gets fixed!

    Hi @Puffles,

According to your concern, this is likely an expected behavior and a product limitation in Word online version.

    • In Word for the web, the page-layout capability is limited. It doesn't have a section break feature and the page numbers are fixed. For example: if your Executive Summary is on page 5, its page number is fixed at 5 if you use Word for the web.
    • In Word desktop app, you have the section breaks and page numbering feature with higher flexibility. For example: your TOC is from page 2 to 5 then you can break sections between TOC and the Execution Summary so you can set the Execution Summary on page number 1, 2, 3 or whatever you want even if it's in page 5.

Therefore, as my suggestion: if you just need simple TOCs, the Word for the web is fine. But if your TOC is tied to section-based numbering or precise pagination, the online app has many limitations, and you should use Word desktop app for the best experience.

Hope my sharing may help with your concern. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. I'm looking forward to your reply.

In Word (including Word for the web), the page numbers in a Table of Contents are controlled entirely by the TOC field. If the heading text is correct but the page numbers are wrong, the TOC must be updated so it recalculates the page references.

In Word for the web, use the built‑in update command:

    1. Click anywhere inside the Table of Contents.
    2. On the ribbon, go to References.
    3. Select Update Table.
    4. Choose Update page numbers only and select OK.

This forces Word to recalculate the page numbers for all entries (such as “Executive summary”) so they match the actual page numbers in the document, including when the TOC spans multiple pages.

If the heading text itself has changed or new headings were added/removed, repeat the steps and choose Update entire table instead of Update page numbers only.
