Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Classic Outlook hanging on “Processing” when opening is a known symptom of startup or data-file issues. Use these steps in order:
- Install latest Windows and Office updates
Outlook works best when fully updated. Install all important and recommended Windows and Office updates. For Office, follow the steps in Install Office updates from the article How to update Microsoft 365 or Office for Windows. - Start classic Outlook in Safe Mode and disable add-ins
A faulty add-in can cause Outlook to hang at “Processing”.- Select Start in Windows 11.
- Type:
Outlook /safeand press Enter. - If Outlook opens, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins and select Go.
- Clear all check boxes to disable all add-ins, select OK, then restart Outlook normally.
- If Outlook now opens, re-enable add-ins one at a time, restarting Outlook each time, until the problem reappears; leave the problematic add-in disabled.
- Repair Office installation
If Safe Mode does not help or Outlook still hangs:- Close Outlook and all Office apps.
- Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Right‑click the Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365 entry and choose Change, then run a repair.
After repair completes, try opening Outlook again.
- Repair Outlook data files (.pst/.ost)
Corrupted data files can also cause Outlook to hang.- Close Outlook.
- Follow the steps in Repair Outlook Data Files (.pst and .ost) to run the Inbox Repair Tool (SCANSPST.EXE) on the data file used by the profile.
- After repair, reopen Outlook.
If Outlook still will not open after these steps, create a new Outlook profile and attach the repaired data file, as described in Create an Outlook profile.
