Need help recovering a recurring Outlook calendar event. After updating the series, the series master disappeared, all future events were deleted, and past events duplicated.

    Hi LexLuc,

This sounds like the recurring series entry may have been removed or corrupted, so the safest approach is to try recovery first, then clean up duplicates carefully.

Try to restore the series from Deleted Items

In Outlook, open Deleted Items and search for the event’s subject, then restore any matching calendar item. If it is not there, use Recover items deleted from this folder (Recoverable Items) and restore anything that matches.

Make sure the duplicates are not coming from multiple calendars being shown

In the calendar list, temporarily uncheck everything except your main calendar. If the duplicates disappear, they were coming from another calendar being displayed.

Remove the extra copies using a list-style view

If you are on Outlook for Windows (classic), switch Calendar to View > Change View > List, sort by Subject, then delete only the true duplicates. If you are on Outlook on the web, use calendar search (results show in a list) to find the duplicated subject/date range and delete the extra copies from the results list, being careful with recurring items.

    For reference:

If you run into any issues with these steps, feel free to reply back with what you are seeing and I will be happy to help further.

Use supported calendar troubleshooting steps to try to recover the series and clean up the duplicates.

    1. Determine what is actually missing
    • Confirm whether the missing item is a recurring meeting request (series master) or a stand‑alone appointment instance. This affects what can be recovered.
    • Note the exact Subject text of the series; this is needed to search logs and Deleted Items.
    1. Check Deleted Items and Deleted Items Recovery
    • In Outlook (or Outlook on the web), search the Deleted Items folder for the series Subject.
    • If the series master or future instances were deleted, they may appear there and can be restored.
    • Ensure Deleted Items Recovery is enabled in the environment so that hard‑deleted items can be recovered if needed. For more information, see Recover deleted items in Outlook for Windows.
    1. Analyze and document the issue When preparing to fix or escalate:
    • Verify whether the problem is reproducible (for example, updating a similar recurring series causes the same corruption).
    • Record the exact steps that led to the disappearance of the series master and deletion of future events.
    • Capture version information for Outlook/Outlook on the web and any other calendar‑related software or services in use.
    1. Clean up duplicate past instances If duplicate past occurrences are visible in Outlook desktop (connected to the same mailbox):
    • Use the CalCheck tool to identify and remove duplicate calendar items:
      • Run CalCheck to generate the CalCheckErr.csv file and review the listed duplicates.
      • Close Outlook and Excel.
      • When satisfied with the list, run calcheck.exe -F -R from C:\calcheck with Outlook closed.
      • After completion, verify Calcheck.log shows a finished status and current time.
      • Duplicates are moved into a Calcheck folder in the Outlook folder list; after confirming the calendar looks correct, delete that folder if no longer needed.
      • If duplicates remain, close Outlook and run the command again, allowing time to complete.
    1. Restore a clean copy of the calendar to Outlook desktop (if using Cached Exchange Mode) If Outlook desktop shows inconsistent or corrupt calendar data compared to the service:
    • Clear offline items so Outlook re‑syncs a clean copy from the server:
      1. Close all Office apps.
      2. In Outlook, open the Calendar pane and right‑click the Calendar folder.
      3. Select PropertiesGeneral tab → Clear Offline ItemsOK.
      4. Outlook will then download fresh calendar data from the service.
    • If Clear Offline Items fails with an OST error, either:
    1. Recreate the recurring series If the series master and future instances cannot be recovered from Deleted Items or Deleted Items Recovery:
    • Manually recreate the recurring series with the desired pattern and times.
    • If attendees are involved, send a new meeting request so all participants receive a clean series.
    1. If issues persist
    • Collect the detailed reproduction steps, Subject text, and version information for Outlook and Exchange/Outlook.com.
    • Use this information if escalation to support is required, as recommended in the general troubleshooting guidance.
