How to get rid of Copolit from Microsoft Word?

Recently my Microsoft Word updated and now there's a banner above the document for Copilot, an interactive button on the bottom right of the screen for Copolit, and an "Edit with Copolit" button when I hover over text (this one is especially annoying because it's now located where bold, underline, and highlight used to be). I do not want Copolit. I uninstalled the whole app, and it's still showing up in Microsoft Word. I scoured the settings in Word and cannot find a way to remove this annoying feature.

If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated!

The fact that they're making it so hard to get rid of and basically forcing people to use the program is really sad. The irony is, AI is supposed to be "more efficient" but all these pop ups are making me less efficient, and I've spent way more time than I'd like to admit trying to figure out how to get rid of Copilot. So much for their so-called "efficiency."

    Hi @Allie H

Regarding your request to turn off the Copilot feature in Word, I have a few quick questions to better understand your situation and assist you more effectively:

    • Could you please let me know which Microsoft 365 subscription you are currently using?
    • Also, could you check and confirm the version of Word you’re running?

If you are using a business or enterprise subscription, the Copilot feature is typically managed by your organization’s admin. In that case, I recommend reaching out to your IT administrator to request that Copilot be turned off.

Thank you again for your time and understanding. While my initial response may not resolve the issue immediately, I’d like to gather more details about your situation so I can assist you more effectively.

I really appreciate your patience, and I’m here to help. Looking forward to your response.

Copilot in Word can be disabled in two different ways, depending on which controls are available in the version of Word that is installed.

    1. Turn off Copilot using the “Enable Copilot” setting (Word for Microsoft 365)

    On Windows:

    1. Open Word.
    2. Go to File > Options > Copilot.
    3. Clear the Enable Copilot checkbox.
    4. Select OK, then close and restart Word.

    On Mac:

    1. Open Word.
    2. Go to Word (app menu) > Preferences.
    3. In Authoring and Proofing Tools, select Copilot.
    4. Clear the Enable Copilot checkbox.
    5. Close and restart Word.

    Notes for this method:

    • The Enable Copilot checkbox is per‑app and per‑device. To turn Copilot off everywhere, repeat these steps for Word on each device where it is installed.
    • If the Copilot page or Enable Copilot checkbox is not visible, confirm that Word is on a version that supports this control and update if needed. As of March 13, 2025, the checkbox is available starting with Word version 2412 on Windows and version 16.93 on Mac.
    1. Turn off Copilot by changing privacy settings (if the checkbox is not available or for older builds)

    On Windows:

    1. Open Word.
    2. Go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
    3. Under Connected experiences, clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
    4. Select OK, then close and restart Word.

    On Mac:

    1. Open Word.
    2. Go to Word > Preferences > Personal Settings > Privacy.
    3. In Connected Experiences, select Manage Connected Experiences.
    4. Clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
    5. Select OK, then close and restart Word.

This privacy setting only needs to be changed in one Office app; it will apply to the others the next time they are opened.

    1. If intrusive in‑document Copilot icons remain

For some recent Word builds, an intrusive in‑document Copilot logo or popup remained even after Copilot was disabled. Moderator guidance indicates that updating Word to build 16.103.1 (Current Channel (Preview)) removed that in‑document Copilot logo. Updating to that or a later build should remove the persistent in‑document Copilot icon while Copilot is disabled.

If the goal is only to hide the Copilot button on the ribbon (not the in‑document UI), the Copilot icon can also be removed from the ribbon via ribbon customization, but that does not disable Copilot features themselves.
