I'm in the process of upgrading to a new Windows 10 desktop computer from a Window 7 version which is starting to die on me (lots of blue screens). I'm starting the process of transferring documents, and I've discovered that some MPG video files are not
playing on the new computer. When I double-click the MPG file, the media player window opens and it appears to be playing the video, playing the audio, showing the time bar with number of seconds played, but just no video displayed.
I checked the same files on the old computer, and they work fine (these are on an external drive, so I plugged the drive into the older computer, so I know it's looking at the same files). I tried various "Open With" options, including Movies and TV and
QuickTime, but both said the file format was not compatible. QuickTime gave an error 2048, saying "...it is not a file QuickTime understands."
It appears that the files I'm having trouble with are videos I created using my video editing software, Pinnacle Studio. I had also created some smaller versions of some videos using MP4 file formats, and these opened just fine on the new computer.
I researched this issue on the Microsoft support site and the web in general. I saw several recommendations to run the SFC (believe that was it) command line, which I did; no issues noted. I've tried to update Windows; it says it has updates ready to install,
and waiting to install, but I can't find a way of getting it started. These all seem to be security related, so I assume they won't affect media player. I also tried to "update" media player, which seemed to be another theme in my search results, but I couldn't
find a way to do this on Windows 10.
I did a search for "mpg" files on my computer, and there are some that play just fine with the Windows 10 Media Player, with video and audio. The ones that play fine show the "MPEG" logo in Windows explorer, and seem to be those that were recorded directly
to MPG via a camera. Those that do not work display video show a "Q", which I assume means it considers them as QuickTime default files. As noted above, QuickTime would not open the MGP files.
Given that these files work on my Windows 7 computer, that tells me there's something wrong with the new computer or Windows 10 software. I hope the information above is understandable, but please let me know if I can clarify anything. Thanks in advance
for any troubleshooting tips.
