Media Player on Windows 10 not working for some MPG files

I'm in the process of upgrading to a new Windows 10 desktop computer from a Window 7 version which is starting to die on me (lots of blue screens).  I'm starting the process of transferring documents, and I've discovered that some MPG video files are not playing on the new computer.  When I double-click the MPG file, the media player window opens and it appears to be playing the video, playing the audio, showing the time bar with number of seconds played, but just no video displayed.

I checked the same files on the old computer, and they work fine (these are on an external drive, so I plugged the drive into the older computer, so I know it's looking at the same files).  I tried various "Open With" options, including Movies and TV and QuickTime, but both said the file format was not compatible.  QuickTime gave an error 2048, saying "...it is not a file QuickTime understands."

It appears that the files I'm having trouble with are videos I created using my video editing software, Pinnacle Studio.  I had also created some smaller versions of some videos using MP4 file formats, and these opened just fine on the new computer.

I researched this issue on the Microsoft support site and the web in general.  I saw several recommendations to run the SFC (believe that was it) command line, which I did; no issues noted.  I've tried to update Windows; it says it has updates ready to install, and waiting to install, but I can't find a way of getting it started.  These all seem to be security related, so I assume they won't affect media player.  I also tried to "update" media player, which seemed to be another theme in my search results, but I couldn't find a way to do this on Windows 10.

I did a search for "mpg" files on my computer, and there are some that play just fine with the Windows 10 Media Player, with video and audio.  The ones that play fine show the "MPEG" logo in Windows explorer, and seem to be those that were recorded directly to MPG via a camera.  Those that do not work display video show a "Q", which I assume means it considers them as QuickTime default files.  As noted above, QuickTime would not open the MGP files.

Given that these files work on my Windows 7 computer, that tells me there's something wrong with the new computer or Windows 10 software.  I hope the information above is understandable, but please let me know if I can clarify anything.  Thanks in advance for any troubleshooting tips.

Todd

Any tips on some sort of alternative to Windows Media Player for general video playing app?  I've typically used Pinnacle Studio for video editing, but I don't think it's a good option for just playing various videos.  I'm not looking for anything complicated.  I'm just cleaning up my files, and want to be able to sample various video files I have stored on my hard drive so I can decide whether to keep them or not.

Just to reiterate my initial problem: Window Media Player on my older, Windows 7 computer can play the MPG videos without any problems, but the version on my Windows 10 computer is not working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

todd_j, I'm experiencing the same problem.  Did you solve your issue?  What happened to Divya M?

I tried again to update Windows, and it seemed to work this time.  After many cases of "problems installing some updates", it finally seemed to get there, and now says that Windows is up-to-date.  However, afraid I'm still unable to open the video files discussed above.  One difference now is that the files that won't open show a "MPEG" icon rather than a "Q".  I get the same results, though; the file opens in Windows Media Player, appears to be playing, but no video.

If I can't get this working soon, I'm just going to return the computer.  Too many issues with a brand new computer.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Have you tried downloading the Video Lan VLC video program from their website?  That usually works.  It seems that Microsoft is no longer supporting MPEG files in Windows 10. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

I downloaded Windows DVD-player from Windows App store and that resolved my problem! NB you have to pay for it.
