How do you get Windows Defender to remove a virus?

My Windows Defender found a virus during a scan. Now how do I make Windows Defender delete the virus?

I select remove, and click the start action button. The start action button goes away, but nothing else seems to happen. If I do a quick scan, I can bring the button back.

If I go to protection history I can see the threat listed. If I click on it here I get a message, "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device."

It says the app is Windows Security. Verified publisher: Microsoft Windows. But still clicked no because I do not know if this change will delete the threat, or install it. That is not clear to me.

So to recap, what step by step process do I need to do to remove this threat? And by means, feel free to pretend I am eight years old while explaining this.

    "as there’s only allow "

No, I get all the options with a dropdown. I shall try explaining with pictures.

This is what I see first. On the main virus threat page.

I click it on it and get this drop down menu.

I chose remove, then click the start action button. And then the start action button goes away, and I am looking at this.

As you can see the start action button is gone. The found threat is gone, but there is a red on the clock symbol by the words "Current threat." There is also a red on it's toolbar icon.

Now if I click on protection history I see this. Yes apparently according to the date, it found the virus yesterday and I just discovered the notifications today.

It says threat found action needed. So I am assuming that means it is still there and nothing has happened to it yet.

If I click on it, I get this screen.

And here is what I get when I click show more details, incase that is helpful.

I always click no, because I have no clear understanding what that means. Will allowing it to make changes means it will remove the threat? Or dose it mean it will install the threat? I have no idea.

Now if I go back to the main Virus & threat protection, this scene in Photo 3,

I can do a quick scan or a full scan, and then I will get what I see in Photo 1 again.

Is everyone now on the same page of what I am dealing with?

    Hi NBard,

What you are experiencing is probably the anomaly with Microsoft Defender.

Under some cases, it re-detects the notification of a virus that it has already remediated.

It detects the "virus" in the Defender Protection History, and alerts you to that, as a new

    virus detection.

If you find that no other scanner detects the "virus", this is likely to be your situation.

You can prove, or disprove that conclusion, by deleting "Detection History" from Protection

History, and then scan with Defender again.

This link describes how to delete Detection History.  Disregard the reference to Pups. This

anomaly also applies to other malware, as well.

    Good luck,  Glen

Hello, I’m Virginia an independent advisor with 20 years of expertise in fixing my own & friends’ PC problems.

    Try running these programs:

    MBAM free: https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/

    Eset online scanner: http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

    Adwcleaner: https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/

If these find one or more infections but do not fully remove them it will be wise to register with a malware removal site to receive dedicated malware removal instructions, an expert will remain with you throughout the process until confirmation that your PC is 100% clean.
