How Do I Turn Off Auto Editing for Transferred Images from Camera?

Hi, I recently started using my digital camera which is an A6000 Sony camera. My laptop is Dell 7280. I use it to transfer the photos over from my camera via the charging cable with usb. However, I noticed that when I open the photos on my laptop, after 3 seconds or so it auto edits it. As if the contrast has gone up and exposure is maybe darker.

Is there any way to change this setting or disable it? I have to use online websites now to convert the images into jpg and download it.

Yes, ARW is the Sony version of Raw file, so it is definitely not native to Windows, hence the behavior you described when you used Photos app. I use Canon and shoot raw format (which is CR3 for Canon), I have the same issue when using Photos app.

You can set it to RAW & JPEG. This means each photo you take, it will be saved as one copy on RAW format and one copy in JPEG. Looks like your camera doesn't offer you a JPEG format only? If so, that's probably what you want to go for. Otherwise you can definitely do the RAW and JPEG, it will just fill up the memory card a lot faster. When you transfer, you can only transfer the JPEG and delete the RAW ones, if you are not huge in editing.

As for Fine or Standard, that's up to you. You can read about them here: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articl... This is about compression. If you want better quality, you can choose Fine, but it will take up more space.

    Hi Emily!

In my camera’s settings they are set to “Raw”. When I transfer them, they are “.ARW”.

The other settings that show up besides Raw are: RAW & JPEG, Fine, and Standard.

Which would be best to choose so that it stops auto editing? I’m not sure how to change the settings to shoot JPG, PNG, JPEG, etc. because I went through it all and nothing shows up for that.

I’m a bit new to all this, so it’s very helpful!

    Hello, this is Emily.

Are the photos in raw file format? If so, this is not really a bug, but simply because it is not natively supported by the Photos app. This happens to other non-native raw format from Canon for example as well.

You can use Sony's Imaging Edge to convert them - hopefully it is easier to convert than using online tool. In addition, your camera can also have settings to shoot jpg, unless you want to keep the raw files for editing purpose.
