Replaced old SSD pre-installed with Windows Pro 11 with a brand new SSD

Hi there,

I bought a new Thinkpad laptop (P14s Gen 5 AMD) with a 256GD SSD and Windows Pro 11, but now have bought a Crucial 2TB SSD that's compatible with this laptop model. I want to replace the old SSD with the new SSD without losing Windows Pro 11 that comes pre-installed when I bought the laptop.

Is there a way to kind of transfering pre-installed Windows Pro 11 to the new SSD? I have no data in the old SSD, so I won't need to keep anything except the Windows Pro 11 itself.

Thank you.

Thank you for the screenshots.

Below is the support page for your laptop on the Lenovo website.

On some device that has an Internet connection, from that web page, download the installers for the Chipset, WiFi and Graphics drivers, then transfer the installers to your laptop and use those installers to install those drivers.

Don't worry, Leo. You can replace your SSD and keep Windows 11 Pro without any issues, as the license is tied to your laptop’s motherboard. 👌

If you prefer a clean setup, download the 'Windows 11 Media Creation Tool' from Microsoft to create a bootable USB. Replace the SSD, boot from the USB, and follow the instructions to install Windows 11. When asked for a product key, select "I don’t have a product key"; Windows will activate automatically when connected to the internet.

If you want to keep everything as it is, install the new SSD in the second slot and use cloning software like Acronis True Image for Crucial or Macrium Reflect Free. Select your old SSD as the source and the new SSD as the destination, then follow the software prompts. Once done, set the new SSD as the primary boot drive in the BIOS or swap it into the primary slot.

Both methods work. Maybe the first one is more suitable for you.

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

If Windows 11 Pro cam pre-installed on the laptop, then there should be an OEM licence stored on the motherboard and any time your re-install Windows, it should activate automatically.

Click your Start Button, type cmd then right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Run or paste this command and hit Enter:

    slmgr.vbs /dlv

Please post a screenshot of the resulting dialog

    Hi Dave and Robert,

Thanks for helping. I've been able to clean-install W11 Pro on the new SSD, but I'm now having new issues. There is no wifi network adapter card detected. I connected the Ethernet cable, but there is no internet. I ran the Troubleshooting and received the message that I've already connected to the internet and that there was no connection issue. Yet I cannot open any web page using Edge.

Besides network connect, it also cannot detect the two monitors I've been using. I've checked the Network Adaptors under Device Manager, but found not names beginning with the word "Wifi".

    Could you please help?

    Thanks
