Hi sweiller,   Welcome to Microsoft Community. Thank you for posting your inquiry about Windows profile and product key related issues.

Facing installation roadblocks can be frustrating, especially when you've done everything right. This issue with the product key validation, despite activation being linked to your account, seems particularly perplexing.

Some information that needs to be explained to you is that members of the Answers community cannot directly intervene in processes involving private information, such as the product activation process associated with the product key. As another community member mentioned, for further assistance with product activation, you may want to contact more experienced online support.

Generally speaking, if you have correctly associated the device, license, and Microsoft account, the process of reinstalling the matching Windows will usually automatically activate the product. For example, if your computer originally had Windows Home Edition installed, and you reinstall Windows Home Edition, product activation is usually done automatically.

In some cases, some community members seem to try to use the general string instead of the dedicated product license/product key.

In addition to using the ISO file directly, you can also try to make it into a bootable USB media to check if the situation is the same.

After configuring the bootable media, some community members may edit a specific file to force the computer to try to automate part of the process.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting 1. Verify Your Product Key

    • Confirm that your product key matches the edition of Windows 11 Home you are installing:
      • Go to Settings > System > Activation and check the edition listed (e.g., "Windows 11 Home").
      • Ensure you are downloading and using the ISO for the same edition. A mismatch (e.g., using a Pro ISO for a Home key) will cause validation errors.
    • If needed, retrieve your product key using Command Prompt:
      • Open Command Prompt (Admin) and type: wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey
      • This retrieves the product key embedded in your device firmware.

    2. Verify the ISO File

    • Ensure the ISO is downloaded from the official Microsoft website:
      • Use the official Windows 11 Download Page to get the ISO.
    • Verify the integrity of the ISO by checking its SHA-256 checksum (Microsoft typically provides this for official ISOs).

    3. Match the Edition During Setup

    • If the setup is not detecting your embedded product key (common with OEM devices):
      • Force the setup to use your key manually:
        • Create a file named ei.cfg:
          1. Open Notepad and paste the following: [EditionID] Home [Channel] Retail
          2. Save it as ei.cfg (ensure the file extension is .cfg) in the Sources folder of the ISO.
        • Restart the setup process.

    4. Use the Setup Command with Proper Syntax

    • You already tried using setup /pkey but to ensure it’s correct:
      1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
      2. Navigate to the ISO mount directory (e.g., E:\).
      3. Run: setup.exe /pkey XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX Replace XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX with your product key.

    5. Disable Internet During Installation

    • Sometimes, Windows tries to validate the product key online during installation and fails due to server issues. Disconnect from the internet before starting the setup:
      • Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug your Ethernet cable.
      • Reconnect after completing the installation.

    6. Reset Activation Configuration

    • Clear any existing activation configuration:
      1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
      2. Run: slmgr /upk This uninstalls any current product key.
      3. Reattempt the setup with your product key.

    7. Run the Installation in Clean Boot

    • Background processes or services might interfere with the setup:
      • Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
      • Go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and click Disable all.
      • Go to the Startup tab, click Open Task Manager, and disable all startup items.
      • Restart your computer and retry the installation.

    8. Perform a Repair Install Using ISO

    • If the error persists, consider performing a repair install:
      • Mount the ISO and open the setup.exe file.
      • Choose the option to Keep files and apps. This performs an in-place upgrade and resolves most issues without affecting your data.

    9. Contact Microsoft Support

    • If none of the above steps work, the issue might be with Microsoft’s activation servers or your specific product key:
      • Visit Microsoft Support and provide your product key for assistance.

    Pro Tip

Once the issue is resolved, ensure your system is fully updated by going to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

Let us know how these steps work or if you need further clarification! 😊. Best of luck—you’ll have this sorted in no time.

    Hi,
I made the CFG file but it did not work.
But after disconnecting from the Internet (removing cable) as pointed, it did work.
The error message about not validating product license disappeared.
