Hello so while I was on my computer this morning my town had a power outage. I have 3 monitors and 1 TV Ive had ZERO issues until today. I could always run my TV at 3840x2160 at 144hz. I could also run my 3 monitors at 2560x1440 at 144hz. But now one of my monitors can only run at 144hz if its at 1920x1080. If i try to change it back to my normal settings which was 2560x1440 it can only be used at 60hz. Ive tried brand new HDMI cables which didn't work. I also tried changing the settings using the NVIDIA APP & NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL which didn't help either. I listed below my computer parts and what I use. Hope someone can help.

Hi! Thanks for writing. I am Tin, and I am an independent advisor. I am so happy to offer you any needed assistance today. Based on the symptom of the 'tiny box with black borders' and all the testing that you have done, your diagnosis and your friend's diagnosis must be spot on. This is classic behavior of a fried EDID controller/input board fault; power surge-induced. Great job invoking the warranty while it covers it, especially as surge-related issues can sometimes take a while to worsen.

So glad all got covered, and it was caught in the early stages. In case of help testing the replacement or setting the display configuration again, do reach out. I will now be marking the issue as resolved for now.

Best regards,

Tin

Hey sorry for late reply. I talked to my local computer store who is also a family friend. He thinks same way I do he thinks because of power outage my monitor got fried somehow through the power cord for the monitor due to face it was showing the resolution wrong and it was in a tiny little box with complete black outer part around the screen. That being said Thank you for your help but I am going to send it back since i paid for warranty. Which they cover the power surges when electricity goes off Thanks again have a good one

    Hi There,

Thanks for the follow up responce. I really do appreaciate your patience here. I do apologize to hear that you are still stuck on the process.

Let us try these steps on what to do next:

► Do a fresh graphics driver install with DDU

This will remove any corrupted display data (like EDID) that Windows may be stuck with.

    • Download DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) from: https://www.wagnardsoft.com/

    • Boot your PC into Safe Mode

    • Run DDU and choose:

    >> Clean and Restart for your GPU (NVIDIA/AMD)

    • Once your system restarts

    • Install the updated GPU drivers from the official website:

This resets all monitor detection settings and can fix signal/resolution mismatches.

► Check monitor firmware (if supported)

    • Visit your monitor brand’s support site (e.g., ASUS, LG, Acer)

    • Find the firmware updater made for your model

    • Some monitors store refresh/resolution configs internally, and this can reset them

► Test the affected monitor alone

Even if it worked before with all displays:

    • Disconnect all other screens (including your TV)

    • Use only the problematic monitor via DisplayPort

    • Restart your PC and try setting 2560x1440 @ 144Hz again

This rules out bandwidth limitations or GPU display routing issues after the power reset.

► Optional Step Manually remove EDID data

Hopefully this solves the issue for now.

    Best Regards,

Ive done step 1 & still have the same problem.
I did step 2 & still have the same problem.
I did step 3 but I will attach a photo of what my computer says on Windows vs what the Monitor says using the physical buttons below.

I just had everything running just fine literally 8 hours ago. Ive done all of those steps already to be honest.

I dont know what is going on :( I might add again I had no issue running my 3 2k monitors at 2560x1440 at 144 hz constantly I also had my 4k TV running perfectly fine at 3560x2160 at 144 hz. While on internet or playing a high FPS game or any game. For what ever reason after the outage just 1 monitor isn't working now. Anytime i change it to 144hz it changes resolution to 1920x1080 i even tried 2 brand new HDMI which did nothing. I also did a display port as suggested with no luck either

    Hi There,

Thanks for reaching out Microsoft Community Forum. I totally understand your concern about your monitors are not working properly after power outage. Allow me to help.

Follow these steps to help you resolve the problem:

    ► Step1: Fully Restart everything

    • Turn off your PC and the monitor

    • Unplug them from the wall for 5 minutes

    • Then plug them back in

    • And turn them on

This resets any display glitches caused by the power outage.

    ► Step2: Try a DisplayPort Cable

    • If you’re using HDMI

    • Try a DisplayPort cable instead

    • Sometimes HDMI doesn’t send the correct info after a power issue

    ► Step3: Check Monitor Settings

    • Use your monitor’s physical buttons

    • On the side or bottom

    • Look for settings like Refresh Rate or Game Mode

    • Make sure it’s not stuck in a low mode like 60Hz or ECO mode

► Step4: Reset Display in Windows

    • Right click on your desktop

    • Click Display Settings

    • Scroll down

    • Go to Advanced Display Settings

    • Select the monitor that is not working

    • Try changing the refresh rate to 144Hz

    If nothing works:

    • Press Windows + X

    • Click Device Manager

    • Expand Monitors

    • Right click the monitor

    • Then choose Uninstall

    • And Restart your PC

Windows will reinstall the monitor and may fix the settings.

    ► Step5: Reset NVIDIA Settings

    • Open the NVIDIA Control Panel

    • Click Manage 3D settings

    • Click Restore Defaults

    • Then check the display setup again

    Note:

Try using just that one monitor alone (disconnect the others) to see if it runs correctly. If it works by itself, it might be a problem with bandwidth or too many displays connected.

    If still not working:

The power outage might’ve messed up the monitor's internal settings. You can:

    • Try the monitor on another computer

    • Or contact ASUS Support and ask if they have a reset tool or firmware update

I hope this helps and works for you.

    Best Regards,
