My laptop keeps hard freezing and have to force shutdown it every time

Hi. My laptop keeps hard freezing. It started last May 26, 2025, around 11 in the evening. It just stopped responding, no input can make it respond. Whenever I press the keyboard, the keyboard itself lights up but no other sign of response. This happened around September last year too. BUt at that time, the screen totally blacked out. All display was gone, but the screen was on. Now, when this occurs whenever I watch a video, the video just freezes at that certain frame and the sound cuts off. No BsOD too. I have to keep force shutting it down to get it back up and running again. Resetting the laptop is somewhat a last option since I have a lot of applications installed currently.

Things I have tried:

• Doing the sfc /scannow and the other command, the one that that ends with RestoreHealth. Everything's fine.

• I tried to restore it to the last point, but the laptop froze halfway and was not able to continue. I did not attempt to do one after that.

• I tried to run command mdsched.exe, totally fine

• Checked my drivers, everything's up to date.

• Windows update is the latest version, too. I even installed the optional updates (since this is what fixed it last time).

Laptop specs:

• Nitro AN515-57

• 8GB RAM

• NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU

• 512GB SSD

• 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-11400H @ 2.70GHz

• Currently have Windows 11

How would I go about fixing this?

Thank you so much in advance!

Thanks for the update I must say that you are so amazing you have done right things that is why it is not freezing for last 40 minute and I am glad to hear that.

Uninstalling drivers and reinstalling was a good move.

About the mouse related concern; malfunctioning or incompatible mouse (especially USB or wireless) can sometimes cause system instability or pointer stuttering. Here’s how to check:

Unplug the mouse and use only the touchpad for a while. Observe if the glitching or freezing continues.

If you're using a wireless mouse, try changing its USB port or replacing the battery.

You can also go to Device Manager, expand "Mice and other pointing devices," and check for driver updates or try uninstalling and restarting to reinstall clean drivers.

In the last I would say that you are awesome and let me know if you need help with anything else

    Regards

    Udit

    Update:

    • I watched a 40 min video, no freezing

    • No problem with memory

    • BIOS is up to date

    • I can't find the additional power setting, this is all I have:

Lastly, could it be due to my mouse too? I noticed that whenever I use the mouse lately that the cursor sometimes glitches / stutters.

    Thank you so much!

Hi. Thank you so much for responding. I have only done the second step so far.

    Update:

    • Laptop froze after uninstalling NVIDIA driver

    • Forced shutdown again, uninstalled the driver again, then successfully installed the driver from their website.

    • I'm going to let it sit for a while, see if it still freezes. I noticed that it just don't happen every time I watch videos. It happens randomly.

I'll keep updating here. Thank you so much again!

    Hello Caryl,

Thank you so much for reaching out and sharing details, I am Udit an independent advisor, and I am glad to assist you today. Based on your description, problem might be related to either software conflicts, graphics drivers, or system files.

So first check for Graphics Driver Issues. Go to Device Manager (you can search for it in the Start menu).

Find your NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 under Display Adapters.

Right-click it and select "Uninstall device."

Make sure to check the box to remove the driver software if prompted.

    After uninstalling, restart your laptop.

Then, download the latest NVIDIA driver directly from the official NVIDIA website or use the GeForce Experience app to install a fresh copy.

Now Check for Background Application Conflicts.

Try performing a clean boot to start Windows with only essential services running.

Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.

Under the Services tab, check "Hide all Microsoft services," then click "Disable all."

Go to the Startup tab and open Task Manager, disable all startup items.

Restart your laptop and see if the freezing still occurs while watching videos.

If this resolves the issue, you can enable services/startup items gradually to find the culprit.

After this Run the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool Again. Press Windows + R, type mdsched.exe, and follow the instructions to restart and check memory.

Now Update BIOS and Firmware. Visit the official Acer Nitro AN515-57 support page and check if there’s a BIOS update available.

And now Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery > Additional power settings.

Select your current power plan and click "Change plan settings" > "Change advanced power settings."

Under "Processor power management," set the minimum and maximum processor state to 100%.

Also, under PCI Express, disable "Link State Power Management."

If after these steps the problem continues, you might consider creating a fresh Windows 11 installation on a separate partition or external drive to test if the hardware itself is at fault.

Feel free to update me with how these go, and I’m here to help you through the next steps if needed.

    Best regards,

    Udit
